Default Why would the US get KU band? Whats the Diff?

In a few other parts of the forum people were talking about KU being legal to use in the US. Some are saying it's not used here yet. If it has been legal to use for 10 years why wouldnt it be used yet?

Also what is the diffrence between KU besides frequency. Why would police need an an additional radar band? Isn't 4 bands enough? X, K, KA, Laser.

Has anyone run KU band in the US and picked up a LEO yet? I think it would be intersting for one of us that travels heavly through the US to try. See where KU falses here and if there are actual any sneeky leos with KU yet.

Nobody made a gun that was approved. I don't think anyone really cared enough to do so.

The only reason would be to defeat detectors, but many detectors come out of the box to run it and any existing one can be modified to get Ku.

I don't think anyone has ran into a LEO with Ky yet.

Can't the US just buy KU guns from overseas?

IIACP generally has to approve them. Plus the radars have to display readings in miles per hour as well. But that is a really trivial change the mfg's would be happy to do.

    LOL

That is not how our government works. First and fore most the person in charge of purchasing the equipment gives the contract deal to one of his friends. Then after, the excessive, absurd, and inflated price is agreed upon with out any competitor quotes (see first point above). These deals do not happen over night, nor can they be made over months, or years, but takes decades inorder to finalize (ok maybe I am alittle over the top here). Anyways point being, alot of money and time need to be wasted before anything new comes to the table. On this particular topic, it is a good thing that our government is not efficient. There are other, better theories why Ku is not currently used here yet. But the reasons above taken from real government examples I feel are part of if not entirely the reason why it is taking so long. Besides we have our new POP to worry about. Another observation is that in the states, it appears that the government like to "milk" technology for all its worth before going to newer technology. Example would be out of the United States. I feel for those in europe and like contries that have more "lethal" speed monitoring devices such as Multinova's (sp?) and Gatso's (sp?) and other monitoring devices.

There are couple of reasons that come to mind not use the Ku band for speed enforcement in the United States.
    1. Due to having a frequency of 13.45 GHz the radar beam would be a much wider than that of Ka 33.4 - 36.0 GHz and even K band 24.025 - 24.250 GHz= more scatter, thus easier to detect.
    2. Even thought this band is only 3GHz higher than that of X band 10.500 - 10.550 GHz Ku is known to have the problems that affect K and Ka with the amount of moisture in the atmosphere. X band has less signal attenuation in bad weather than any of the other bands and yet is nearing obsolescence.
So I would have to agree with some of the other posters that we are not likely to see the use of Ku anytime soon. Too many disadvantages for a possible 3-5 year window where some radar detector users would be left unprotected. Quite an investment considering it is not much diffrient from X-band in many respects.

For what I would see is marketing Speed Cameras. Yes I know that there are K band Cameras and Ka photo Cameras, but you ever thought of international trade. Maybe the Government is looking at importing to save money. :?:

As for Atmospheric disruption/resonance (water vapor) to Ku or Ka, I really donít see the correlation. Last I recall 22GHz was the center +/-2GHz is the spread of field disruption. Hence the reason K band requires a higher output to compensate for loss in ranging. This would regard up to 24GHz to be covered within the problem area.

Now I have heard that Ka has an issue with gaseous resonance, ie Oxygen. Thought minor compared to K band.
