    Default Austin-TX radar/laser

    Hi All,

New to the site, long time speeder. Been doing alot of reading and I am now looking to get a RD. I guess my first problem is figuring out whether laser or radar is the biggest problem around here for me. Anybody know where I can find regional/local info on this? The V1 looks like a real great unit but I'm wondering if the either the X50 or RX65 will fit the bill at a bit less $$. Definately interested in the VEIL product though and will be ordering some soon. Thanks for the input!

There's a thread, I believe, in the speed trap info area of the forum that has bands by state. Keep in mind that will be only the state police, not your locals. If you plan on using passive laser countermeasures like veil, I would look more towards the X50 or V1 rather than the RX65. Out of the three the RX65 has the worst laser detection. Both the X50 and V1 seem fairly capable of detecting laser on your car though, so either would work well with veil.

Now this is what this board is all about. Compu44 uses the RX65 but recommends the X50 to a new member needing advice. Compu44 is definitely hitting the nail on the head with this one. The RX65 is not very good on laser so I too would have made the exact same recommendation, the X50 or the V1 since laser is a concern for the member. Nice job Compu44.

Many thanks for the kind words, aust. Last thing the forum needs is another Zombie.

I do like the RX65 a lot, and I do feel that it's better than X50 for Ka, alert volume, and has Ku, but for laser, the X50 or V1 are just plain better. I will be the first to say that I have been targeted dead on with laser and never got a peep out of my RX.

I looked at the other thread too, looks like TX has it all, X, K, KA, POP, and LASER.

Member Outrun is our big Texas person, so he might be able to offer up a little more info.

HighV - Since you seem to be considering all of the big three, I'd highly suggest reading both the Guys Of Lidar's review (http://www.guysoflidar.com). and Veil Guy's review http://www.laserveil.com/en/ultimate.../introduction/
if you haven't already. I'd trust GOL's a little more for strictly performance stats since Veil guy was running more than one RD at a time, but Veil Guy points out more usability-type features between them (alert volume, disp quality, mount quality, etc.)

Now, off to bed for me. 3AM and i've got school tomorrow!

That was my next question....what are you doing still awake? My reason is that I work midnights downtown Chicago.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I really appreciate it. I have been going back and forth between the V1 and the X50. Seeing as how Austin seems to be full of all forms of radar and laser Im now considering getting an M20 as well...

I have one more question though. I noticed there was alot of talk about front license plates being a primary target for laser. I know in some states (if not most) it is required to have a front plate. From what I have seen the general trend is to either remove the plate and take your chances or put some kind of laser absorbing material over it (ex: VEIL). I was wondering why you couldnt simply angle the plate up or down a few degrees(~15) to deflect the majority of the beam instead. That way the plate is still on the vehicle and its a pretty low $$ mod.

EDIT: I know the plate is not a 2-D surface so the rise of aplha/numeric stuff would reflect back but it still seems like a lower profile relfection. Anybody happen to know what % of the total beam needs to get back to the laser gun for a reading?

I had been up shopping for a subwoofer system for my car. I can function pretty well on 3-4 hrs of sleep/night for a week or so. After all, You can sleep when you're dead!

    To HV-

The M20 is a fine jammer, and would work pretty nicely. Outrun's has done great!

If you're going to get a Blinder anyways, the RX65 becomes more of a reasonable choice, so be sure to give it a look.

    X50 - + Good for high mounting
+ Nicer threat display than RX65
    + Blue option
    + Simpler volume control.
    + Pretty good for laser
    - No Ku built in
    - Not as loud as the RX
    - Ka range isn't quite as good as the V1 or RX65 (GOL test)

    RX65- +Loudest of the bunch
+Excellent Ka (better than X50, about the same as V1)
    +Built in Ku
    - Poor laser detection
    - upwards tilted display poorly suited to high mount.

    V1- +Best for laser
    +Built in Ku
    +Great range
    +Good for high mount.
    +Directional display
    +Hardware upgradable
    - Lots of falses
    - J feature still isn't quite worked out
    - Expensive
    - No self calibration
    - Hard to program without the manual at hand.

I find the X50 to be quite loud if you turn the normal mode to the loud setting. Just my input. I use it on my motorcycle with a ear peice and have had no problems at all with the detectors sound.

I find that the sounds for , Laser, K, X, KA, POP to be quite pleasant sounding as well compered to some of the others.
