Default Best Detector for Victoria Australia - Do they work?

    Hi All,

I am new to this forum, it looks great, there is plenty of info here and everyone seems helpful.

I have a few questions. I live in Victoria Australia, my question I guess is more for any Aussies out there, what detector are you using, and secondly does it actually work. In my daily driving I come across many speed cameras us alot of us in Victoria will do, most of them are the old Gatsometer cameas, the old ones in the blue box, and more recently the grill mounted cameras. Here is the dilemma

I have owned 2 detectors one back in 99 which was a Bel 845sti and now a Whistler 1788, guess what neither have or ever will detect these speedn cameras. Last night I noticed an old blue camera near where I live, it was fairly quiet on the road, so I connected up the Whistler, and drove right past the camera, you guessed it no warning at all, the detector did not even signal. So went to a friends house picked up his Escort 8500 guess what no signal, laser guns sure no problem, speed cameras forget it.

So my question is no BS, do these things actually detect photo cameras, such as the old Gatsometer, I would be curious as to what other people in Australia are using. And are you able to pick up these cameras?

I am thinking of getting a V1, but who knows if the detect them either, can somone recommend a detector that will work on cameras?

    Thanks

well, nothing in this world is perfect, unfortunately those things are nasty, this may sound like a dumb question/comment, but perhaps they are not working, I would have no clue as to how one would determine if they work, other than parking infront of one, but if the detector still does not find a signal, I would tend to believe that the speed camera is not processing.

I have heard from others that, detectors such as Bel target 550 are better, and there are others.

Your best bet if you want something that really works, would to be blow the cash on those GPS radar detectors, you download via the internet known installed speed cameras from a database from a server. In addition the RD part of the unit is setup to scan those popular camera radar frequencies.

That is my advice, its alot more than V1, but it is you asbsolute best chance at avoiding those cameras.

There is another cheaper alternative, by a cheap GPS road un it and manualy research and enter those coordinates. But you still need a RD specific for your type of warfare, for those mobile units.

    Hi There

Thanks for the post. I have a little Uniden GPS system that picks up the fixed red light and speed cameras, its the mobile devices I am worried about. The detectors work on laser and even on KU in WA as I had a mate their test them, problem is they dont pick up those ancient GATSO cameras that are used in Victoria.

Since you are in VIC where detectors are ILLEGAL I suggest you go for the new Bel Sti.. which police would be unable to detect...

It should also give decent range on the gasto K band cameras...

I hear there's this nice little device called the "Stealth Ninja"...

Just kidding. I'd look at the Bel V995, RX65, or STi--preferably the STi if detectors are illegal there (and the police enforce it beyond writing down the serial number and giving you a $50 fine).

Those Gatsos must be running on Ku. An STI is great save the lack of Ku reception. Though a box RX65 will catch it.

This site might help you choose? I would go for the V1 and I think the EURO MODE on the V1 would be suitable in your area?

Thanks for the responses guys, as detectors are illegal where I live in Victoria my look at the STI from Bel. Although I think that when it arrives here its over 1,000 Aussie dollars. I spoke to a friend of mine who has a V1 he advised that the V1 detects the old GATSO and new grill mounted cameras used here in Vic. Although in saying that he lost his V1 last week, got picked up along the Hume Hwy by the TOG and got his detector confiscated. No fine or loss of license so he was very lucky.

I am looking at either the new Bel STI, the Escort 8500x50 or the V1, although not sure where you can buy V1's in Australia. WHich would be best for photo camera detection? What are you guys in Victoria using?

I have the whistler 1788, looking to get something from the top 3, the whistler aint that crash hot, particulary on camera

I would go with the STI. I think that if you have not had a detector before you would find the lack of a automute on the V1 a terrible annoyance. Aside from that the STI is the only RD that is not detectable. I would also recommend the 8500x50 or the Bel RX-65 as they have excellent detection range and false less than other detectors in my experiance. But you will enjoy any of the big three though.

Sorry I did not see that you have had a whistler. I personally have the RX-65, and I am very happy with it. But also laser detection is not an issue for me either.
