Default bel express 795 and cobra 7100

hi guys, i bought a bel express 795 back in '05 around the time when they came out. it served me well for quite a while and i put it away when i got my new car and kinda forgot about it. well..i decided to dig it about a month ago and noticed that it didn't work at all like it used to!! passed several cops who had people pulled over and never went off. do they just wear out and quit picking up radar??

next scenario.. b/c of the story above i went on a gamble and bought a cobra esd 7100 off of amazon for $31. now i knew cobra didn't have a good rep. when i bought it, but i was just looking for something inexpensive b/c of money constraints that would at least do somewhat better than my "worn out" Bel 795.
not long after i bought the cobra it picked up a city cop running k-band maybe 1/4- 1/2 mile away w/ traffic in the area. seemed like a descent amount of time for me to be able to slow down if i had been speeding. well.. that changes today when i was fixing to turn down my girlfriends driveway and what do i see.. a county cop sitting there obviously clocking traffic going past and it doesn't go off until i turn down her driveway and am facing him!!?? what the heck? how does it go from working descent to working crappy?

    1. Not all LEOs leave their radar on when they pull people over.

    2. Many LEOs run around with their radar off most of the time.

    3. Many LEO cruisers don't even have radar installed in them.

    4. You have bad RDs. They might have missed an alert that a better RD might have picked up.

    5. The LEO you saw monitoring traffic could have been using laser. Check out the FAQs in the Laser Jammer section.

Cobra's suck ass. Look into Escort, Beltronics, Valentine One, or Whistler. For the love of god throw the cobra off a cliff.

the instant that happened today he was not using laser b/c i saw him sitting in his car and he did not have a lidar gun. anyway i know cobras are junk. like i said i took a gamble and obviously it failed.

how are the less expensive Beltronics models like the v955 or v940?

I do not recommend the Bel v940, because it lacks the ability to turn off X band, which isn't a threat for most people, depending of course on where one drives.

For the budget conscious, I personally recommend the refurbished Escort 8500 directly from Escort's Ebay store. They are fantastic performers for $150. Here is a little chart I made that shows how I think the RDs around $150 stack up to each other. Opinions on this will vary a little around here.

    Overall:
    1. Refurbished Escort 8500
    2. Bel v955
    3. Whistler SE

    Sensitivity:
    1. Refurbished Escort 8500
    2. Bel v955
    3. Whistler SE

    Reliability:
    1. Bel v955
    2. Whistler SE
    3. Refurbished Escort 8500

    Features:
    1. Refurbished Escort 8500
    2. Whistler SE
    3. Bel v955

    Reactivity:
    1. Whistler SE
    2. Refurbished Escort 8500
    3. Bel v955

    False Alerts:
    1. Bel v955
    2. Refurbished Escort 8500
    3. Whistler SE

    Warranty:
    1. Whistler SE
    2. Bel v955
    3. Refurbished Escort 8500

What you choose probably depends on what's important to you.

The X50 is supposedly pop capable, but having pop enabled hurts overall performance and you're probably more likely to be hit by lightning than pop. On top of that, the X50 sucks at detecting pop anyways. The original 8500 performs better and costs less.

Bel 795 is better than a Cobra rd. They sometimes can fall out of calibration, but it still was a decent unit in it's time.

Doesn't BelScort do like an up to $80 trade up? Look into that, dunno if they do it on refurbs tho.
