    Default Radar Detector Range

What is the shortest distance that a radar detector can detect radar and still be considered a good detector. For example the Rx 65 can detect most bands over four miles. I know the longer the distance the better but what is a good distance if you have a detector that is not that sensitive. I mean a good distance for a average person going a little over the speed limit not going 120 mph or so which would not help. Just trying to get my wife a detector thats the reason for the question. Any light you could shine on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

1.5 miles is about the lowest you would want to go.

    Default Capture Area

Well What I suggest is having a radar detector that has over 7 times the capture area of a police radar gun.

As an example, in El Paso this January, we tested the RCR-C450 and the capture area was 1.5 the capture of the K band radar gun. This is too low!

And a lot is going to depend on the terrain; curvy roads and mountain areas will shorten your distance too.

Just buy the best you can afford.

Regardless of how great the range is supposed to be, it really doesnt matter in real life------for example, some radar detectors have this amazing 5 mile range---I have an x50, and have never had my detector going off for 5 miles! It all has to do with traffic in your way, curves in the road, etc.

Just buy the best you can afford, and dont pay attention to what its range is supposed to be.

As long as you're buying from Roy, that's a fine way to go. With his return policy, he can't afford to sell junk!

I consistantly get more than a 2 mile range with my old 8500 and my new V1. Not always, depends on the situation.
