Default Why do some LEOs use lidar but leave radar blasting in CO?

I saw this phenomenon this morning and didn't even have to rely on jamming because the V1 was blaring Ka alerts long before I got to the trooper shooting a Laser Atlanta. He was standing outside the car as he picked off approaching traffic. It appeared that he left his radar on.

Was this a mistake? Was it intentional? Does leaving the radar on really benefit them in any way?

You're thinking too hard about this. The vast majority of drivers do not use CM therefore would not be alerted by the C/O Ka.

But to answer your question, they forget and they know most people don't use RD's.

Most of the time, they do just forget. Sometimes they intentionally leave it running as a confirmatory reading for the laser. If a ticket gets challenged, and they got you with three different methods, then they're not likely to lose. And then, rarely, they leave it on intentionally to slow traffic down. But as already mentioned, there just aren't enough RD users out there to make it particularly effective.

I'm sure 99% of the time this happens they forgot to turn it off. They're driving along with it on, they pull off into their lasering spot with it on, they get out of the cruiser with it on, and they start lasering traffic... with it on.

As for using it to confirm a lidar reading, that's only possible if they're inside the cruiser where they can see the radar's display. Most likely they have the doppler audio turned down so they are unaware that the radar is still transmitting when they're standing outside the cruiser lasering.

Since most drivers don't use RDs it has nearly no effect on their ability to reach their quot... er... performance goals.

This is indeed my observation. It is extremely rare for me to see an officer with his Doppler tone turned up.

Happened to me once, but from my end, I didn't know he will be using laser as well.

So he gave me a nice long warning with his microwaves, then comes the infrared as I'm already going the PSL.

Click one small button and be on my merry way.

I guess they just forget and leave it on.

A really nice freebie if you ask me.

I love when it happens. I don't question it, just accept it as the gift it is.
