Default How to "de"tune a RD?

I've been reading a lot about RD's falling out of tune.

Is this from dropping it etc., or do they just detune from the summer heat and the cold winters?

What is a normal amount of time one should check to see if their RD is out of tune?

Are certain detectors more prone to fall out than others?

    Thanks,
    Buz

What are the symptoms of a detuned RD? I has running Tech Mode on my x50 & STi and they reported two different frequencies from the same source. Not sure which one was accurate but the numbers were off by over .300 (ie. 34.1xx vs 34.5xx) Is that normal?

A radar detector becomes "de-tuned" when the local oscillator falls out of calibration. It needs to produce a very specific frequency in order to operate optimally, and once it drifts off that frequency you start to have problems. The most common symptom is that you will get dramatically decreased sensitivity, possibly missing threats entirely. The best way to tell is to pay attention to your local falsing points and make sure that it's going off when you would expect it to. If all of the K-band door openers suddenly go dead in your town, be concerned.

Check out Holla's thread in the Valentine 1 section. He talks about his experiences when his V1 fell badly out of tune. The thread titles is something to do with "New V1 for $75."

My X50 and RX65 show close numbers, sometimes the same, sometimes slightly different ( 0.0XX different).

Maybe this is why your STi falses more than usual?

That's what i'm thinking. Is there a way to test maybe some Radio Shack equipment or something to know for sure? (without returning to Bel for repair)

Did you really get 34.1xx because that is WAY off of 34.700, not doubting you but that would add information to as what I trying to figure out TECH mode. I had a 33.493 which is also WAY off 33.800 BEE. It is a consensus that the TECH mode is NOT reliable, and can mean absolutely nothing. My wacko number was a confirmed trooper sitting over a mile away from me, and the signal did not cut out. Why it displayed a wacky number I am trying to figure out so as to figure out if I can trust Ka narrow option.

See if your recent options you made make a difference, seems good so far, see if you can confirm what what you begun. Then speak to Bel and maybe get a replacement if things don't feel right. People say the replacements they have recieved were always better, makes me think that they insure QC on those replacement units (specificaly test and tune).

I think it has been said that (*maybe*)the RD's 'sweep' outside the known designated bands somewhat so that it has a 'safety net' of sorts for out of tune police radars. I am not sure about that though.

i've noticed in the winter time and in cold areas rd's getting out of tune more (from reading in the forums). i think not being at room temp. and being ran like this repeatedly (while its cold)can cause it to go out of tune....just speculation though as i really don't know. :?:
