    Default PNI Steel Eye

Noticed that Roy has a new PNI model up. It's the PNI Steel Eye.

This looks like a really interresting unit, especially for the price. I can think of a couple friends that would have a good use for these (driving several vehicles.) Main question that I had- What's the battery life like with POP on and POP off?

It can't detect POP without being pluged in

Even a 1977 Escort will detect K POP once in a while...

But a 1987 Escort won't go fast enough to ever get a hit anyway...

Manual states that battery life will be reduced greatly if left in POP mode so it can detect POP off batteries only. They do specifically suggest using the power cord in POP mode though.

    Default POP Mode

PNI made some adjustments before final production and yes, the Steel Eye will now detect POP in cordless mode, but battery life goes way down

A couple sets of NiMH batteries would probably do the trick. I use those things in just about everything these days.

The first cordless radar detector that can detect POP radar (testing shows that the unit must be plugged into a 12 volt power source to detect POP 100%)...

Don't know if NiMH would be suitable for use in an RD or not. Output voltage on an NiMH is 1.25v instead of 1.5 if i'm not mistaken. Best Alkaline batteries that I have ever found was the Kroger generic ones. Those outlast even duracell batteries.
