SoÖthere has been a lot of discussion in the forum, in various threads, in the recent past, where folks have been expressing dissatisfaction with various RD capabilities and/or features, or lack thereof, for the more prevalent RDs used by members. It also seems that there has not been much happening in the RD community with regard to new equipment (less the Passport IQ) to address these issues. I am detecting a serious thirst for the next generation of RDís. I am curious what it is that forum members are looking for in the next generations of the following detectors:
Q I 4 5
Other RDs are welcome
Some things I have been hearing about are specter resistance, Q/T, multiple antennas, ect.
I am also wondering what people think a real game changer would be. The Passport IQ seems to be a first attempt at this, but that model has already received less than a glowing reception, even from users that the unit would likely be marketed to in Australia and Canada.
For example, I would like to see the 9500Ci upgraded to a dual antenna system once the V1 patent expires, with better Q/T reaction times, no shifter system included, and more modular optioning. For example: Escort could offer the following: a basic Ci package that is limited to a high performance radar detection installation with the option of adding on shifters and/or a GPS dual function display. I would be willing to take a hit on a base unit so as to move away from the windshield mount. Ideally, escort would come up with a shifter system that was competitive with LI; that would allow this type of modular system to be marketed profitably. I think users would be very likely to add modules to their setups with time.
Please donít use this thread to bash RDs that you are not fond of, as the intent of this thread is to collect ideas for RD product improvements, not compare the performance of current models. Even if a poster makes an unrealistic claim, please try to resist J.
Note that the makers listen, this was posted back in 07-18-2007
What would you like to see in the next Generation RD?
Besides better detection and the obvious, list what you like to see in the near future for the next generation of radar detectors.
Here are mine:
Ability to adjust sensitivity, signal hang time alert, and squelch / filter settings via computer software. I like to have a radar detector built with a mini USB port that comes with software to install on my computer. The USB wire coming from my computer to the radar detector will also provide power for the electrical parts allowing for firmware flashing.
The radar detector will be defaulted to a factory setting like our current radars do when purchased. Once connected to the computer via USB and communicating with the radar detector, the software can kill all settings within the radar detector leaving the radar detector without any filtering, squelch settings, pretty much having a wide open receiver BUT useless at this point. Obviously the software would have a big fat button you can hit to flash the radar detector back to factory default.
The software would display slide bars that you can adjust going left to right allowing sensitivity settings. Another slide bar you can adjust for squelch settings. The adjustments can go on and on. Being able to share these settings with each other and test would not only be fun but also provide the user with maximum flexibility with their detector.
Several RD's now offer some of those features
