I've owned a Whistler XTR-325 for some years now and I'm looking for an upgrade. For several reasons, I've decided it will be a remote installed unit.
First, it is the convenience of the remote installation. With the windshield-mount I have to unwind the cord, mount the unit, plug it in the lighter and turn it on. All this reversed when leaving the car. With all that hassle, I simply don't bother mounting my XTR-325 unless I'm driving out of town. A remote install, on the other hand, would be active at all times I'm driving and need no further maintenance to protect from theft.
The second reason is concealment. RD's are legal where I live, however I'm frequently driving to Greece and Serbia, in both of which they are forbidden. I don't think they have RDD's there, but I wouldn't risk operating a RD that is easily visible.
These are the primary threats I'll be facing:
The vast majority of speed enforcement here is X-band radars and IO has become increasingly common in recent years, so IO X-band detection is extremely important for my choice. There are some fixed speed cameras on K band (not sure about their details, but I've heard they are hard to detect) and they're getting more of them next year, and considering K very widely used radar band elsewhere in the world, good K performance is also essential. I've heard some unconfirmed rumors there are new mobile radar systems in patrol cars, at Ka band, but I've never encountered such. No laser around yet.
According to some posts around here, in Greece besides laser they use K-band, some Ku and (rarely) X.
This is the information on Greece, from the Regional info forum:
As far as I've heard, Serbian police mainly use lasers, so they're not that relevant.2) Greece (many tnx to sakoylini)
Radars:K band (24.125GHz), Ku band (13.450GHz). X band (10.500)
Lidars: ProLaserII,Traffic Patrol,Ultralyte LR.
Fixed speed trap,Gatso ,Traffipax Speedophot K band(24.125GHZ)
What I've considered:
Whister Pro-3450 Remote:
Low cost and good value, but it is aged and inferior to other models. Also, it is missing Ku band. And, it bothers me that the laser sensor is mounted in the cockpit and will be easily visible upon inspection. So, probably it won't be this.
I'm strongly considering this. It may not be on par with the top Belscort models, but according to reviews, it is a good all-around detector, has all the features I need and Ku band! If I choose this, I still have to decide whether to get the standard U.S. model, or the one modified for Europe I discussed here. The Euro maybe is a nice upgrade, but I'm still not convinced it's worth the premium price.
Sti-R Plus, 9500ci:
Top performers, RDD-undetectable and the GPS feature would be nice to have, but high price. Also, they are missing Ku band. If there are any indications that, e.g. the Greek police are acquiring spectre around, I would lean more towards them, but right now at over $1000 I consider them prohibitively expensive.
Any comments, suggestions and other ideas?
