I used to use a vintage Original Escort Passport in my 1968 Impala. It was a great detector for it's day but it only detected X and K bands. I loved how inoffensive the detector looked, No LED's or digital displays. The Detector was wired to the ignition switch, I even loved how the distinctive starting BEEP. BEEP. BEEP mixed with the sound of the Small Block 8 coming to life when I turned the key. That detector saved my ass from the local LEO's more times than I can count. Although a few years ago I noticed it missing cops that appeared to be shooting radar. I assumed that they were using Ka band. Then that same winter I turned the key and the BEEP. BEEP. BEEP failed to sound and the Passport was dead.
I decided that since I needed a new detector I would look for one with Ka band. I found on Ebay a new detector, a decade the Passports junior, the Bell Vector III. The display was nearly inoffensive but not as nice as the Passport. It detected K band nearly as well as the Passport and I was pleased with the new addition of Ka band.
All was good until I was heading down route 299 at a good 90mph when I saw in the distance at the top of the hill a state trooper, so I hit the brakes and slowed down to 65 in two seconds flat. I thought to myself that all was well because the Bell Vector III never made a sound. But as you would guess (because I am writing this) all was not well. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw the flashing lights. I pulled over to the side cursing under my breath, I took the Grateful Dead tape out the the 8 track player, and did my best not to look like a stoner.
I was greeted by the Statey who promptly asked me if I knew how fast I was going. I replied "No". He informed me that I was going 79 in a 55. The ticket I received confirmed it, and it also informed me of the radar gun that bested my 20 year old Bell Vector III; the Stalker Dual.
In light of the aforementioned incident I must now acquire a new radar detector. This time I am willing to put function in front of form. What would you, the experienced persons of Radardetector.net recommend for the best used detector under $100 that is up to all modern threats?
I look forward to your thoughtful recommendations.
