Default need help finding a decent radar cheap-midrange priced.

hey all, ive downloaded the handbook and am going to read it tomorrow but figured it was worth it to post to see opinions on my personal situation.

anyone from the nw indiana area knows hobart cops are vultures. i was literally pulling into my neighborhood one day and a headlight went out infront of a cop who was hiding (keep in mind its a neighborhood, no thru streets even) and got a ticket. ive also been pulled over and given a ticket for rolling thru a stopsign when i could have sworn the car came to a complete stop.

now that its the end of the year the cops are going nuts on speeders. espically the road i travel down most, route 6. it seems like the cops work as a team, one runs radar on the other side of a hill that goes over railroad tracks and the other is following you, then they both pull you over to get the commission. its brutal. ive had friends get puled over for 1mph faster than the 35mph speed limit. my car wont even shift into overdrive at 35 lol. also, this hill if you are going even 30 at the top and dont ride your brakes you will coast to 45 with the car in neutral.

here is the speedtrap article on where im talking about
    http://www.speedtrap.org/view/Indiana/52417

i basically only need a detector for this one road. everywhere else you are relatively ok but i drive down this road every single day and with the quiet ride and the torque my car has its extremely easy to creep up over 35 and not realize it. aside from that, you go 35 and you have traffic flipping you off. so if anyone knows of a detector that i can use on this one single road thats cheap/midrange and works well id love to know. my limit is around 200. i know that isn't alot to work with but when your tank gets 15mpg and gas is $3.15 you have to set a limit.

    thanks alot!

Well I am not familiar with Indiana at all, but it seems like Indiana uses Ka and Laser. If your area primarily uses Ka band then a radar detector will help you out. If your area uses laser, then it will be a lot harder to protect yourself.

For ~$200, I would recommend either a refurbished Escort 8500 (which can be found on ebay for $150), or refurbished Escort 8500 x50 (on ebay for $200). They are both on sale from Escort Radar themselves on ebay and they come with a warranty. A Beltronics v995 is also good, as well as a Whistler Pro-78se.

I believe most people will tell you to buy the 8500 (non-x50).

P.S.: I was in a situation similar to yours and I was looking for a ~$200 radar detector and I bought the Beltronics RX65 on sale. Trust me, eventually you will want to upgrade to a better radar detector and you'll regret, just like me, buying a $200 one when you could've saved a couple hundred and splurged on the best of the best (V1 or Redline).

You should really save for another $150-200 and buy a Valentine 1.

A used Escort 8500 is a good choice, excellent value for the money. If you can save and buy a V1 or Redline I would, they are better detectors. The Redline has exceptional range. The V1 has very good range, situational awareness (arrows / counter), and good response (IO/QT). Adding laser jammers will run up the cost. If you get a jammer, look closely at the LI. Read up before you buy.

IN also uses K. Midrange detector, go with the 8500, otherwise, get the best. You cannot skimp on protection. Buy cheap, buy twice, get more tickets, pay more insurance. Buy the good stuff, buy once, get lots of saves, keep paying your same insurance rate.

The question is how fast do you drive. If you drive 10 miles or under the SPL then I would go with the 9500IX,STI, or the Refurb 8500. If you drive 10 or over then you better save your money and go with the CI,STI-R,Redline, or the V1.

and I/O K band by State Police. I'm always out in Indiana to notice it. They're ALWAYS using unmarked Crown Vics or Interior Light bars instead of roof mounts.

Don't limit your thought process for just this one road, think about the "big picture" when it concerns all your traveling routes, city and/or Highway, even the potential routes. The V1 is a chatty and most people don't like a noisy RD but it's my favorite and my Redline comes in second (only by a smidge though). I've used the Passport 8500 both the X50 and the regular, it's a good RD but not nearly as good in Range as the V1 or the Redline, so my advice is to tough it out and save up for a premium RD. I do sympathize w/ya on the Gas prices though. Also definitely stay away from the Cobra RD they are Sub Par in performance.

Understand this completely your damned if you do(follow the PSL and get flipped off) or damned if you don't (drive over the PSL and chance the ticket) LOL,

Also here's a very good site for RD performance related info. http://www.guysoflidar.com/radar-det...rld-tests.html

    Good luck!!!
