Default good radar for a poor man?

hello all, ive been having such a hard time figuring out what these things are called, i was trying 'police scanners', finally found the correct term, and such a great forum too. ive read a few reviews on your more expensive detectors, but even with a search function was unable to find anything for a poor man. can anyone suggest a good radar detector for under 100 dollars? or better yet, under 70ish dollars? i must seem like such an unenthusiastic asking a question like this, but for the time being, at least until i have my new job settled in, im in need of something good cheap. i appreciate any help you experts can give a beginner like me!

The cheapest you can get by with is a $150 Escort 8500 refurb. Anything less and you are just detecting your next ticket.

None of us want to recommend something that will give you a false sense of security, so if by that you mean can we point you to a Cobra, I doubt any of the users on this forum will have anything nice to say. I've heard good things about Whistlers on occasion, but again, I doubt you'll get that under $100.

If I were in your position, I'd consider getting a cheaper detector (ebay for $10 to $15) BUT know full and well that it is a cheap piece of garbage plastic, and use it for trade in credit (Escort has a promotion where any RD is worth $80 toward the purchase of a RD - this is where I'm unsure though, cuz idk if its only toward brand new detectors). Call Escort's customer service before you do any of this to see if you can trade your crap detector for a refurbished 8500. Otherwise, save your money, and wait till you have $150.

you will definitely be better off with a used product than something that costs < 100 new. look for maybe a Beltronics (bel) 940 ish. if you get a used escort 8500 that is of questionable quality and questionable origin you might get one for slightly under $100 (vs the $150 i paid for a refurb from the manf.)

Yea, there's been countless people asking whether there's a good detector for $100 or less.. but the answer is there aren't any "good" ones but perhaps half assed ones. You certainly don't want something half assed or you will get burned. Some people get real lucky and find beltronics, escort, or whistler detectors for about 100-120 used but it's rare.

When I first wanted to get the V1, I did not have enough money. What I did was put all the change I had in my pocket into a jar everyday. I did not want to buy a cheap RD and regret it down the road. So I just held out and kept putting change into the jar until I had enough for the V1. It was painless and it works! A little patience goes a long way.

I don't think you can use the trade in program on the refurb 8500. I think it only applies to detectors that are being sold on their website.
