I have 2 Passport 8500 (non-X50). Both are not working as well as they used to (seem to be less sensitive and more falses). On one, the manual mute button no longer works and on the other, it goes into self-calibration about once a month which it never used to do. I have been reading some of the forum posts and many still regard the 8500 as a top notch RD. Should I:
A) Send both in for service/calibration and be done ($160 for both)
B) Trade in for an X50 ($220each with the $80 off trade-in program)
C) Sell both and get a Valentine 1
Before I bought my original 8500, I bought a V1 but sent it back because of too many falses. Has Valentine gotten better with this? Maybe I should have played around with the settings more? I have a belief that the Valentine is better made and more durable than the Escorts, though I have no real evidence to support that.
Is there a significant improvement with the X50 vs my 8500? Some posts I read say they are built on the same platform (S7?) but others say the X50 has more range- especially with Ka. If I get mine serviced, can they upgrade it to match the X50 performance?
Notes: I am mainly concerned with Ka band (western NC). I keep the Laser turned off since I would here it go off when I KNOW there was no laser present. Also, from what I understand, a bona fide laser warning just means "pull over". I don't think NC has any of those new-fangled "POP" guns. And I am worried that the GPS feature in some models may remove some legitimate locations (video on YouTube where driver is sitting next to a cop in traffic long enough to eliminate that location).
Opinions needed and welcomed.
