Does a vertical install increase radar detector range?

Seeing how you are in the states, no, not really. In Europe, some forms of photo radar are polarized such that you get better range mounting vertically, but in the US, the only polarized radar gun that I can think of is one of the Stalker handheld Ka band units, but that still requires the officer to tilt the gun 90 degrees when aiming (and few cops know to do that).
So no, in the USA, you should mount your detector as per manufacturer recommendations.
