Default Another Redline vs. V1 dilemma...

I live in Yuma, AZ where I’m about 175 miles from San Diego and 175 miles from Phoenix and it’s open freeway in both directions. The freeway radar cams’ are now gone from Arizona but the cities still have them. I’m not sure what’s new in the San Diego area but I noticed one freeway tripod cam on Interstate-8 near the summit.

Ok, that’s the baseline, so which detector would you folks choose? I like the arrows idea of the V1 while I also like the range of the Redline. Still, I remain perplexed between the two.

Range of the Redline without a doubt. I've had an 11 mile moving (oncoming) Ka in the Arizona desert.

There are no speed enforcement devices in California.

The range is a toss up. Instant-on will have you a ticket. Just ask Openhighway.

Alrighty then! Despite the 'cool factor' of the V1 and years upon years of indecision, I finally went ahead and bought my very first radar detector ...the Redline. That's right, I've been on here since 2008 and never once followed through with any purchase. I've wanted an RD ever since the original V1 came out (yes I'm old) but never could quite justify the coin. Actually, I still can't but what the hell.

Anyway, I just now pulled the trigger and it should be here by this time tomorrow and I feel all weird inside.

You are much better than me, I lasted a week before buying one. And about 4 months before buying 2 more

    Hi AvsBest,
So, by looking at your sig pecking order, you didn’t much care for the Redline and simply went for broke and got the supreme top of the line STiR Plus? I wanted that model as well and it was on my short-list for the past year or so. I simply couldn't swing the cost with the install. Besides, when I do a real 'road-trip' I rent a Cadillac and leave the Passat at the shop for routine service.

Oh well, there is always next time if the impulse bug bites me really hard!

I didn't buy the Plus because the Redline was bad, I bought it because it was the top of the line. Also, I live in an area that is exclusively Stalker I/O for highway patrol so missing an I/O shot was just not an option for me. I have a brand new car and had enough balls to install it myself. Took 21 hours, was a pain but I learned from it and now if something goes wrong I know where to go and what to do. I only run the V1 on the highway, I don't even have it in the car in the city.

Don't forget, Redline has Stealth and cannot be detected by SPECTRE.

Good thing to know if you are traveling cross-country.

My car is about at half-life but I would likely give it a try unless I found someone who has done it a few times. Now, if I found someone who has done a Passat or two, then I would sure hire that person. Most everything on a VW requires a special tool with very few exceptions. The only thing I can easily do is to fill the tank and put air in the tires! Some installers really suck so I may do what I could and hire someone to do the rest.
