    Default 8500 x50 black vs cobra 9970G

Ive been doing a lot of research and it has come down to these two models.
The escort seems to be a better radar detector and more reliable, but the cobra has the gps feature.
My question is, is the escort that much better of a radar detector that it is worth not getting the gps feature?
    Prices:
    Cobra:190 on amazon
    Escort:300 on amazon
    Thanks

STOP! Don't buy anthing yet! First, I was you, I would do a search on the web "radar detector compairson test" for example to look at test on past RDs, a good start is "guys of lidar" on the web. Second, you get what you pay for, a cheap RD means more tickets (distance and how fast the RD is). Now, there are some non cheap RDs that are nothing but bells and whistles, look for performance, then ask here on input. For example, not pickin' on the $500 Escort Redline, but is is known to not alarm on I/O. Everything out there has a pro and a con about it! Always ask and don't believe the bs on adds for they will milk you for money to subscribe for this and that. The 8500 is a mid RD- not good enough (guys of lidar)! Cobras spew out freq on the airways and makes life hell for other users plus it is slow, never buy a cobra!...I use a Valentine One and can say (with it's new phone apps) is the standard to beat for performance and cost $399! But, ones needs maybe different than mine, I/O radar.......

Do you run your v1 with band guard on or off? from what I heard it's pretty slow on I/O with band guard on and if one doesn't use it, it picks up every false signal on the planet. What's the real story?

Take some time and read info found in forums, and not just this one. Don't believe the fan boys, there is no perfect detector and they have different options useful for area you live in and radars used. And, if you buy a Cobra not only will you be sorry, I will have to reach through this screen and slap you!

If you're on a budget, get the Refurb Beltronics RX 65 S7 from Escort Radar's E Bay store; its fast on Ka (USA Mode) and for the $$, its a great unit. A New V1 with Savvy and its new V1connec tion Android Phone app (iPhone to come late spring 2013) will set you back almost $500 clams.

Escort is like a higher class Cobra, better to have? Yes! Reliable? So so! GPS? Are you looking into locking out falses alarms on your normal route? That is a bell and whistle! PERFORMANCE is the key to not getting a ticket! Why GPS over performance? Only if you drive in the city with a lot of door openers. Of course a 8500 over the cobra, any day. Cut your cost and peformance, more tickets!

Off is the way I run the V1. With the Ka Guard on, the V1 can alarm with in .3 to 1.6 seconds on a normal Ka after a hit depending on several things (band, older V1). Turn it off, almost instant alarm. Most people can not drive with the Ka Guard off due to Cobras for they hate any false alarm, their way or no way (Cobras makes life hell for everybody!). Slower with the Guard on (Guard lowers the -db slightly and delays the alarm looking for the odd harms from a Cobra like all of the other more slower RDs do, called filtering which gives one tickets because when your in the target and/or fastest display, every micro second counts). No, not pretty slow(still the fastest out there for a filter) but too slow for me, but I'm not normal. I use a 2 volume priority alarm program, low volume for a heads up and a loud volume for the aaaa-sh*t I/O because I want the hit to alarm fast asp and loud to give me a chance (no paying tickets for 19 years with the V1, knock knock)! You know the real story. Falses given to a driver in the proper way is not bad, but I think different than most!. For the average driver, they are not going to win an I/O because of their RD cannot be filter free, thus making the Ka Guard still a no issue. The V1 is still the overall standard to beat which the STIr+ has some advantages segmented. Sorry, this is not a V1 thread but I answered the question....(PS- the new apps for the phone deals with some of the issues to see the out-of-the-box Cobra freq and to seg the bands which makes the V1 even better)

The X50Black is an extremely effective radar detector with very good non-GPS anti-falsing. It will detect radar much better than the 9970G.

You can add a SmartCord Live power cord and wirelessly link the X50Black to your Android or iPhone smartphone running our Escort Live app to gain GPS based features like false alert elimination, red light and speed camera alerts, speed limit data for major roads, and Live alerts from others using the Escort Live app.

Escort Radar customer service is available from 8am-6pm Eastern Time Mon-Fri at 1-800-543-1608

Sillybob, here is some insite. I noticed the 8500x50 Black is $339 and now is jumping into the big boys ring with lower cost. It is a very good little RD (giving the Valentine a run for value) on the improved bands even beating the $399 Mighty Valentine (with the Ka Guard on) in some areas. The only thing to hope for that it does not have is the actions of it's big brother the Redline (is not the longest range RD), which likes to sleep on the job (Escort get off of your rear and fix this issue). Escort has a history to be slower (also to false less which some love this trade off, then even add GPS to make it less sensitive and less range but good for the metro life), but slower than it's brother company Beltronics who has woke up to the call for speed (we called both of them Belscort). In time we will find out how good this little bad boy performs over all (the 8500 Black will beat the Redline in some areas) and might turn out the be the best seller of all RDs! Again like everybody has stated, please don't get a poor performer (bells and whistles) like a Cobra for it is always near last in line on performance.....
