Default The "My radar detector is older than me" thread

Ok, so I'm a n00b... I came across this forum from some people on w-body.com when I asked about getting a radar jammer for my car (I thought they were legal but now am dissappointed that they are not.) I got pulled over in my girlfriends car on the interstate and got a lovely ticket. If I was in my car with my radar detector I would have been set.

Anyways, my radar detector is probably older than me. Everyone I know hates it becuase even though it's "Anti-Falsing" it goes off for damn near everything. And it's the most annoying radar detector, ever. It has saved my butt many times (well other than the time I was doing 95 and the cop threw on his radar just as I passed him, then it was way too late!) I got it given to me and am pretty sure the thing is older than me. It's fallen apart numerous times and has been superglued and duct taped back together. It's always had a problem with a loose power cord jack (hence the big rubber band holding the wire), but I got ambitious one day and took it apart and fixed all that ailed it. It works amazingly well, and since I've been using it for 4 years I know the differnece between a falsie and a true alert (I also know all the points it goes off on both I-91 and I-89, I'm a looser I know!) Only in one instance traveling down past white river junction with the detector in my girlfriends car it never went off. I passed by 2 speed traps and 5 cops running traps. The detector never even beeped at me once. I'm guessing they were using laser because they pointed the gun right at me and nothing, and I've never had that happen before even with new radar guns it still detects them. (They were all standing out of the door of their patrol car clocking people with a hand-held device.)

Anyways, here is my antique piece of equiptment:

I'm sure that thing doesn't detect Ka at all, and it certainly won't detect laser.

Chances are, when you drove by the LEOs with their radar guns, they were using Ka.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

If I had to guess from the case design alone, I would say that this was built in the early to mid 80s, when the only threats around were X band and K band. These days X band is quite rare and K band is slowly being replaced by superwide Ka band and laser. It's extremely cool that you have it up and running but if you are serious about detecting speed traps you really ought to get something that's up to date.

Jim is going to love this when he sees it. He's all about the early equipment.

I seriously have not a clue what the cops are running around here, but it picks up all their in-car radars from a pretty damn far distance. It's also picked up almost every hand-held I've ever encountered also up untill recently on that recent trip down to lower Vermont. Im amazed with it's performance being as old as it is. But it picks up SO many X band falsies it's ridiculous! I've had people in my car unplug it on me before (w/o me knowing) and I've gotten picked up for speeding not shortly after

But for X and K that thing is pretty good.
Yeah, I'm planning on getting a new one sometime soon, I was going to buy one within the month, but I ended up droping my digital camera and shattering the TFT screen so I need to replace that first. Next extra amount of money I have, I'm getting myself a Beltronics RX65.

Ahhhh a class 6 road. Only one of the most fun roads to drive on. It's not maintained by the town and is blocked off in the winter because it is such a dnagerous road to drive on. It's only one lane wide and all really loose gravel. Its one of the greatist Rally X roads that I know of. point in case, here is a fun video I made with my [crappy] digital camera:

    Default maxon

Maxon is the company, back in the 80's, that always challenged Passport to a one on one test...saying that they could tie or beat the Passport. I do not think the test ever was done. But back then, only x&k bands were it for the most part.

    just found....from DAK.com

"Over 450,000 of us took the radar challenge and showed that a Maxon Radar Detector I found in Korea could take on the biggest name in publicly held radar detector companies."

"A $10,000 Challenge to Escort", advertisement for MAXON RD-1 Radar Detector-DAK Industries, Inc.,
