Default Don't depend on your detector !

using a RD is just one part of being a fast and safe driver. IMO people depend on their detectors FAR too much ! When I was regularly driving over the limit I soon learned NO DETECTOR will keep you safe without proper driving techniques to go along with it.

I will post just a few here I learned and others can add more.

1.) when cresting a hill or going around a blind curve ALWAYS LET UP ON THE GAS

I don't care if you have the best detector on the planet it will not help you. Police just love to hit you with I/O in these instances.

2.) when your driving in a open area and you see a car coming toward you in the distance LET OFF THE GAS

many a time this can be a unmarked car waiting till get right on top of you to I/O you.

3.) when you see a vehicle approaching you from behind and catching up to you on a country road let up on the gas till your 100 % sure it isn't a police car !

4.) always drive with your eyes looking FAR down the road.

You don't know how many times this has saved me !

Very good advice brother. I avoided tickets for years w/ out an RD using these types of methods.

Your eyes are more important than your RD - YouTube

I was saved the other day by using my eyes and not my RD. I scanned the road that I always travel(speed) on, and I saw an anomaly about 1/2 a mile up the road. It was a motorcycle cop waiting with a lidar gun behind some telephone poles. My RD remained silent because he wasn't shooting anyone, just waiting for someone who was obviously speeding. If you listen closely, as I approach the light, I say to myself "There, Must be a cop.." You can also hear me taping my breaks quickly to warn ppl behind me.

May i just suggest tapping on the brakes causes accidents. I can see you doing the old headlight flashing but for your own safety, plz be careful tapping the brakes. You are very correct using your eyes as is the case so many times...especially motorcycle cops...can usually see them sticking out if you look for them like you said...

Instead of tapping your brakes you could just let your mom drive.

If I let my mom drive me everywhere, I would never get a ticket, but then again she drives as fast as I do. So instead of me getting the speeding taxes, it would be her

With a good, sensitive detector that gives you a few seconds to respond to the threat safely (foot off the gas and no braking), you can avoid a ticket and still drive safely. Finding a detector with the most advanced warning (a good, sensitive detector) of at least a few seconds is a challenge but well worth the trouble to avoid traffic radar that may even show bad readings due to un-calibrated radar units.
Over the years I found that most detectors under $100 are junk and do not give you ample warning time to safely respond to the threat. After many years of wasting money on these "toys", I ended up with a high end detector that put me back a few hundred dollars but that is still way less than one ticket with its fine and insurance surcharges for the next 5 years.

So what is this RD you have? How do you like it ? What settings work where you are?
