Default Need advice on budget detector

I'm currently using a cobra 9340 for my detector that I've had since I was 16. Now I've been looking to change to a better detector but they seem to use mostly K with some KA mixed in. I want a budget buy cause it's more to be alert cause I don't speed a ton. I was looking at the whistler cr85 but a lot of reports say it has bad x and k detection and I'm mostly facing K it seems. Any advice is great! Also please don't recommend redline's or v1's. Yes I understand that I'm sacrificing by going budget but I'm just looking for awareness more then speeding protection.

the cr85/cr90 have ok detection on both x and k, but very good ka and laser, plus they do an exceptional job at filtering out k-band lane departure systems. X is only something you need if you drive in nj, oh, and a couple of states in the south.

the alternative is to get a refurb escort or bel model--an 8500 x50 or a bel vector detector would also be decent choices.

Hmm that's what I figured. The 8500 x50 is on sale for 180 right now brand new.

I'm not saying this, hint hint! One might make a call to a factory, hint, and ask to see if a returned or refurb Escort unit is available at a discount. One might call (or PM) the vendor of this website also and ask what is available at an extra super price (I have no connection to anyone- I'm getting $20 in the mail. LOL, kidding!).....Whistlers do have good Ka like VG stated and have a quick alarm times against I/O, about as good as a V1 with the filtering turned on, faster than heavy filtered Escorts in general. But, certain Whistlers get X and K band alarms mixed up sometimes as been reported. If you do a search on the web on radar detector comparison test, that can lead you to info where the last test RD test (maybe 2 years ago) by an east coast test group showing the x50 Black (newer units do have the higher performance) performed very well and just about matched the filtered V1......What state do you drive in? I think PA is mostly K band.....

I live in buffalo, well a suburb around buffalo. And I got a lot of K hits from police but also Ka at times. I thought Ka was taking over but I still get a lot of K lately

Welcome from another WNY resident. 34.7 is primarily used by the Town of Tonawanda and Village of Kenmore PD's. 35.5 is used by the Town of Amherst, City of Buffalo and City of Tonawanda. Amherst, Town of Tonawanda and Village of Kenmore use K-band in some of their cruisers, however the Town of Tonawanda uses it primarily in IO traps. 34.7 is also used by the NYSP and Erie County Sheriff's Department.

Which area are you in? You may also want to consider a good set of laser jammers, as Amherst and Tonawanda use the ProLaser, and the NYSP primarily use the Ultralyte LR-B, TruSpeed and TruSpeed S.

With respect to detectors, the Whistlers are an excellent budget detector, having owned several myself in the past. A refurbished Passport X50 or any Beltronics unit are great as well.

I actually live in williamsville, but I work in the city. How bad are the whistler cr85/cr90 X and K band detection? Would it be worse than my current cobra 9340? Also would the beltronics rx65 and escort 8500 x50 destroy the whistlers in K and Ka detection?

Sorry guy, can't PM you yet (I guess due to the number of post). One could check out Escort on the web, could call the toll free and could ask about the refurbs (they are rare) or the returns at a low cost. Escort did have an exchange program where you could sent in a used working RD (your cobra) and get an extra discount, don't know if that is still going on or would apply but I would try. The Escort Rep may chime in and help you out also if he sees this post. Also check out the web site of the ad above and see what is on sale......

To bad you hadn't signed-up here on the Forum a few days earlier.I just spent Thanksgiving w/ relatives in Cheektowaga & ate breakfast @ The "Original Pancake House" on Main St. in Williamsville, their "Dutch Baby" style pancake rates a 10+ IMO !!! Coulda demo-ed an S7 for you.

You've had some exc. choices offered in less costly RDs & I would have to 2nd the RX-65 "S7" for consideration. It's as fast as a V1 for radar detection & almost as sensitive, too. It also has exc. "off-axis" radar detection like the Redline RD does. It's not quite equal to them both but runs very, very close 2nd place to them for less than half the cost.Escort Radar has them for sale occasionally as a "re-furb" unit w/ a 6mo warranty for only $199.
Also, they can be found at a bargin price when a private party has upgraded & bought a new highend RD !

Is there a way to tell if an rx65 being sold is an s7 model? Also is the s7 rx65 better then the escort x50 black with the m4?
