Others have mentioned that they have had no particular problems. Definetly pack as carry on. You can still request to hand check your eletronics rather then sending through the xray machine but I do not think there would be a problem either.Originally Posted by postman
TSA: "Prohibited items are weapons, explosives, incendiaries, and include items that are seemingly harmless but may be used as weapons - the so-called "dual use" items. You may not bring these items to security checkpoints without authorization."
So do you think your radar detector can be used as a weapon? if not..then your good to go and carry it on with you haha.
A detector could be used as a weapon. You could plug the power cord into the detector and start swinging it around using it as a "ball & chain" type weapon. To make it more effective have a softdrink can with you and some duck tape in your carryon. Rip open the can and tape the sharp metal edge of the can to the detector, now you have a detector swinging around with a sharp edge on it.
On a serious note, I would think you would be ok having it in your carryon.
But with our security at the airports, who knows. They have performed extra searches on old ladies using oxygen because they thought they could be a possible threat.
Well they are allowing box cutters and other object back on planes again, it was in the news.
The only problem with packing as a carry on is that you may (probably will) be asked to demonstrate that any electronic device you carry on actually functions as it is intended. For instance, people are asked to power up laptops and CD players all the time. It might be difficult unless its a cordless. I worked in avaition for 6 years and this was the policy even before 911.Originally Posted by amoney
True. Someone once brought up this point aswell. I have gone through with digital cammeras and video equipment, they hand searched it but did not ask to power on. Also as far as laptops go, again they hand wanded it for explosives or whatever, but they did not ask to boot it up, then again everyone had a laptop, so inorder to boot them all up would be a huge deal of time, I suppose if your all alone they may ask but I have never seen a problem.Originally Posted by mystic
I think carry on that clears the xray equipment is fine, I think electronic items that are totally hand checked get asked to power on.
I also have a small GPS unit  This will really grab their eye HUH??Thank God it uses a battery  I can start it up for them
Bring along a instructional tutorial "How to fly a commercial airliner" book, that along with your GPS will be a real hoot for the TSA.Originally Posted by postman
