    Default Car and Driver Review

I emailed C&D asking them if they had a RD review coming up in the near future. I reminded them that the last one they had was in 2002. I received a reply today stating that no reviews were planned for the near future. Their reviews are product driven meaning that when there were enough new products on the market, then they would do a review.

That was good thinking Catus. I have always wondered that. I wonder why they won't?

I find that interesting. It would seem to me that a yearly review would be warranted since there are software updates that can make a difference. This suggests to me that there is a financial reason (beyond readership) for the decision. Do the comparison when they are getting enough advertising dollars from the big 3?

I think it has more to do with the market for RD's is shrinking. Since a lot of states have raised speed limits it has really hit the bottom line of RD manufacturers. RD's aren't as relevant and interest in them isn't all that high by the average consumer. So it is unlikely that they would publish an annual article given the demographics. If states were to start bringing back 55-60 mph speed limits then RD's would be hot again in a hurry.

Well there really hasn't been any new upheaval in the products on the market... V1, X50, RX65 on the top end, and various things nobody cares about on the bottom end A bottom-end detector test would be interesting.

Also the market has shrunk dramatically since 1986 (when 65 mi/h speed limit was permitted) and again since 1995 (when NMSL was repealed entirely). Also factor in that the performance hasn't really improved since 1986 - the addition of Ka and the threat of laser and improperly used POP and the prevalence of instant-on techniques really made a dent in the effectiveness of the devices.

I heard the total USA market was about a million units/annum... I think it was in the C/D test from 2002 I don't unfortunately have any numbers from before however...

Just take a look in any car rag for the detector ads... look in a Road and Track from say 1984 and there must be 20 ads for Whistlers, Bels, Road Alerts, probably a couple full page ads for ESCORTs, etc etc. Now you usually just have a V1 and X50 ad...

True enough. I sometimes thumb through the car magazines and many brands are no longer even advertised.
