Default Need Help on Choosing a RD!

I live in SoCal and drive to Vegas and Laughlin, NV plus Lake Havasu, AZ quite a bit. I have been lucky so far with the tickets UNTIL 3 weeks ago when I got hit one mile from Laughlin.

So I decided it was time to invest in a RD. Have been reading the posts for about 2 weeks now to determine which one is right for me. It comes down to the V1 or Bel RX50. They both seem to be fairly close. Just need something to push me one way or the other.

I have talked with Roy and he firmly likes the RX65. But I see a lot of you have both. Since this is my first one and I can only buy one I would like your input and help. Why V1 is better or RX65 is better.

In both forums I see great love for V1 but also dislike with problems and the same goes for the RX65. So since not one really sticks out, which one is better for my area of driving. I want to get one before my next trip which will be in the middle of April.

Any insite will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Any one will give proper detection, just comes down to features.

Backing up a step just to be clear and you know what your dealing whit, if you hold any belief that you can out brake a cop in time to save your butt from laser, and you want that shred of capability, then forget about the rx65, it is the worst of the "Big 3" (Bel rx65, Escort X50, V1). Other than that they are all relatively the same, except for the features. Want arrows? On he highway it should not be a big deal but if in the city alot, do you want less "falseing"?

Remember these RD are not fool proof. But like I said above (except for laser) they are all realatively the same.

amoney, not knowing the ins and outs of using a radar I don't know really what features are more important. That is where I need most of my help. I think at this time it would be more for the highway than the city. Being in SoCal and normally driving a construction truck I an not as worried about the city and with the traffice you really can't go too fast anymore. But when I get in the to wife's car to the trip then I want to get there fast to have more time. So I am trying to get what is best for me.

Features I think less "falseing" is good, I am reading laser is coming in more. So any help is something. If more laser is out there then it is more important. Don't real know about "arrows". Are they really that important? Beside feature I don't need it to do hundreds of things. I like the KISS method. Keep It Simple Stuid. So don't need tons.

I know if a CHP sees you and you hit the brakes hard he know your going fast! So with some of those things. What do you think is better for me?

i have had both the x50 and currently hvae the v1. both are within feet of each other on detecting radar. from what ive been told, the chp uses Ka at 34.7ghz which the V1 is the winner of detecting that band. Granted the V1 only alerted 100' or so before the RX-65 which is aprox. 1 sec of driving going around 80 mph. Also, the V1 has the arrows and the rear antenna. This is helpful for a CHP officer running behind you, you hvae an extra anteanna pointed out looking behind you. As for laser, i hvae yet to see/hear about CHP using laser but i wouldnt doubt that the use will become increasingly more popular with time, and as stated before, the V1 has superior laser detection over all the other units. The arrows are simply just a guide to tell you where the radar source is so you dont have to guess.

As for features, they both have similar features. each has a "bogey counter" which will tell you how many radar sources it is picking up. but for a new user, the rx-65 or the x50 will be more user friendly becuase of the fact that is has a digital readout display with easy programablity. The only other feature that really sets the rx65 and the x50 aside from the V1 is that automute. when the x50 picks up an alert for a selected period of time, it drops the audio level as to not drive you insane with an hour long alert. wtih the v1, you have to manual mute or set the mute option in seconds.

in my opinion and that of a few other members, the V1 is for mostly highway driving, and then the rx65 or x50 for city driving. hope this helps.

Well, the easiest way to figure whats good for you would be to take the 30 day money back guarrantee V1 challenge. If the V1 annoys you and/or you dont get into the complexity of the fancy features, then a more simple traditional RD is for you. Now you have problem choiceing between rx65 or X50, basicly the X50 win becuase of all around performance including laser detection (but rememebr what I said earlier about laser). Then if you have regrets, return the 2nd RD and repurchase another V1, heck order it "refurbished" and may be you get your first V1 back for a cheaper price.

Thanks againtme and amoney. I think I can handle a few setups on the V1. Since you say it is more highway and I want it more for highway I'll give it a shot. As amoney state I can test it then return it and try the X50.

On the V1 referbs. does it have the same warrenties as new? Plus reading Veils reports it seemed to me that the new update was fixing the false readings. Is this correct?

For a first detector I think the BEL RX65 would be a great choice...That was my firtst detector until my father borrowed then got it stolen.....It's ease of use was great. I still occasionally drive with my BEL v995 both detectors(V1 and 995) are mounted by my rear-view and I switch off between them.

Yeah a V1 is the best of the best as some say but really the BEL rx65 has better Ka performance than the V1 which is exclusively used by HWY patrol in Cali and NV

One thing where I think the V1 might excel is the K-band radar drones since you can auto-mute the drones..just my thoughts

You can't go wrong with either detector, but I think the BEL rx65 is the best detector right out of the box in stock settings for the new comer to the industry

You say RX65 has a better Ka band. I went to GOL site and their Jan. 2006 reviews agrees with you at 33.8 GHz and 35.5 GHz but at 34.7 GHz V1 has it beat. Which band is normally used? Knowing this would help in deciding, too. Is there a way to find out what they are using or if they have laser, also or do you just have to know someone in the business?

I sure wish I could demo these to see which one I like best like they do with snow skiies, cars, etc.

I know for a fact that the NV hwy patrol uses the MPH industry KA guns with POP the BeeIII
