Thread: First Detector

    Default First Detector

After three tickets, I've decided to get my first detector. I live in Eastern Washington State and commute between Yakima, Moses Lake, and Spokane regularly. I have been pulled over by Adams & Grant Co. Sheriffs, and the Washignton State Patrol. All three tickets have been from staters. One was from the air, one from an oncoming, moving cop car, and one from a stopped car. I drive a 1998 Subaru Outback Wagon. Can you guys make any reccomendations? I like the idea of a concealed model. Based on what I've read on this and other sites, I'm leaning toward the Whistler DE3500. That seems to be the best I can afford at this point (I'm still a student). Has anybody here used this model in a car like mine? Thanks for the help.

Hey you would most likely get better performance with a dash mounted detector. the concealed whistler i haven't heard much about but a dash mount will give you better performance. I would recommend the BEL v995. It is my current back-up detector and it's range is on par with the V1. Hardwire it high and you will have much better performance than a concealed mount.....

    Just my 2 cents

You really don't need a remote unit to be stealthy. I live in VA and I have just hardwired my RD. AND YOU CAN'T SEE IT IN BROAD DAYLIGHT from any angle.

In other words, CrazyVolvoRob, is absolutely right. After hardwiring it, I went out last night with a friend and it worked great against RADAR, haven't been hit with laser yet. But for me, Laser (right now), isn't going to help me a lot anyways. I don't have VEIL or any other laser countermeasures. So, unless I get scattered, I am dead anyways.

I agree either the V995 or the X50 Red are your best bets... those are in the 250-300 dollar price range, those are what I would recommened for a student.... however even lower Vector models are worth a look.

I would recommend the Bel V995. This is just under the V1 in terms of detection and Bel is # 2 in detection anyway! Mk

Man I'm a student too and didn't have much money to buy one too expensive so I bought a Whistler PRO 58, which works for me really well. You can read about it, but it does its job well and detects laser very well you can buy for $74 + shipping, or the PRO 73 which is a little bit more nicer for $104 + shipping. the website is {edited out} or for a little more in radarbusters.com. {edited out} was very responsible with my order and Radar Busters I heard is really good, too.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by hardwiring. When you say hardwire it high, do you mean mount it to the rearview mirror? Do you then run the wires down the A-pillar and tie into a power line by the firewall (like the one for the stereo)? Thanks for the help.

Here's another off-the-wall question. If I get the Whistler 3450 (remote, but not wireless), mount the radar sensor to my roof rack cross bar, and the laser sensor next to the license plate, would that be better than a simple dash mount detector?[/url]
