    Default About Scanners...

Ok, I am new to this whole "scanner scene" so please forgive me if I ask some stupid questions. But I was talking to my buddy and he said he has this scanner in his car that indicates when police are near... I was wondering about this, and what it does, if it works, and where you can get one. Thanks for the help in advance.

that is lie! if it worked like that I would have had one years ago, and I wouldnt be wanting to sell the one I have. Basically, all a scanner does is it lets you hear what police officers tell other police officers. Whenever they talk on thier radio, you'll hear it. While you might hear interesting things on it, I personally find it a little boring. I'd love to get rid of mine. Its a RadioShack Pro 95, if you still feel the need to get a police scanner, I'll give you a great deal on it. But, you can also hear the firestation, and weather.

Well not so fast.. Look at the pro-2051.
It has that feature... But they have to have that type of system.. I only know one state to have it, WI state police.

Scanners that have the "Highway Patrol Alert" feature:

    Discontinued models:

    Uniden BCT-7
    Uniden BCT-10 (detector-sized)
    Uniden BCT-12 (detector-sized)

    Current Models:

    Uniden BCT-8
    Radioshack Pro-2051

In some states, it works great, in others it doesn't. For example, it still works well in Ohio, I use a BCT-12 when I go down there. Even with the newer digital system, they still use the mobile repeaters. I've had it work in Illinois in the last few years too. Never tried the newer models yet...

You get more than just police: You can get the following: Fire dept. Government agencies Federal and State, aircraft, news media, Coast Guard, Ham radio, CB radio and Military. It's nice to know there is a huge back up on the freeway because of a collision so then you can avoid it.

    Default Scanners

I have a Uniden BCT-8 that fits my purpose just fine. It does have the "repeater" capability but the officer has to activate it for it to work--this one works fine for me.

Nice little unit has pre-programed frequencies good for if you travel between states.
