Default Moving into the realm of scanning...

Well recently I've become more and more interested in scanning.

I found the Canadian "Administrative and Technical Frequency List"...

Which ends up giving a text file like this:

Alright I see F*rd has some freqs on it, but I don't see anything listed as "Surete de Quebec" like I should. But St.Albans Vermont has a Montreal transmitter? Huh? ops: Basically I can't make heads or tails about anything here...

So what kind of scanner should I go for? Analog? Digital? I want digital but what kind of prices are they likely to stay at for the time being? Do I need to program specific frequencies into the unit? Can I also pull in CB channel 19 or should I install that 40-channel CB that is under my desk?

    LiQuiDz what is your experience?

Any good links for me to find out anything?

If I was you, I would get a digital scanner. I believe that Montreal already uses some APCO25 digital radio (I know that a lot of Ontario does). But if you're not sure, try out a cheap analog scanner for a while to see if you like it.

Some of the radios, such as the Pro96, can come with some frequencies already programmed. But usually people program them with their own stuff via computer interface or by hand.

As far as finding frequencies and other information, you can use the published governent lists as a good starting point, but in my experience usually the best sources of info come from websites dedicated to scanning in your specific region. Other scanner enthusiasts will have listened to the frequencies extensively, and they determine what they are really used for instead of the generic descriptions in the government lists, then publish them on their website. Some people do this all the time as a hobby...

A lot of scanners will be able to receive CB too. Sometimes this provides adequate performance, other times the performance is lacking, depending on the unit and the antenna being used. Most of the other things you will be listening to are VHF/UHF.

    aight here some more...

if you can afford a DIGITAL one get one, if not get a cheap one until you can, ANALOG Still offer good stuff on it

Here some tip finding frequency for police:
Most city governments do not list their local police, sheriff or fire with the FCC under such names. They are typically listed as "City of", "County of", "State of" or a combination of both. For example, "Atlanta, City of", "Portland, city", "Denver, city and county of", "Florida, state of"
    *from http://www.nationalradiodata.com *

I don't recommand you to get a scanner if you only use it for speed trap
scanning can be alot of fun, not only police, there is a good HAM station around Montreal.

My scanner doesn;t cover the CB Band if you don't plain on talking to cb, a scanner with those band should be fine, I am considering to get a CB installed in my car for road trip ( I travel alot and in long distance)
