    Default Which scanner to buy?

    Hey,

I want to buy a scanner to aid in my detection of LEO's around the area but also to monitor Fire/EMS frequencies because I volunteer for one of the local fire departments and my issued pager is pretty poor quality. I am considering the Uniden BCT-7, BCT-8, and 785D (non-digital one, upgrade only), and also the Radio Shack Pro-2051.

I am wondering what you guys think about these scanners. The BCT-7 seems very similar to the BCT-8 except for no trunking, but my area is going to digital soon so trunking won't matter. The Radio Shack scanner has a 1,000 foot transmission pop feature that might help pick up cops talking while travelling, but I don't know if it also has the 3-mile alert that the BCT-8 has. Does anyone know?

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Default Scanner

Well, if your area is going digital, I'd get a digital scanner. With Uniden's new 396 just out, I'll bet some good used deals on their 296 or the RS Pro 96 will be available.

If your looking for a handheld the BC-246T seems to be a favorite. If you want all the bells and whistles in a handheld unit (digital trunking) get either the BCT-346 or the Radio Shack Pro-96. The 346 is the first scanner to be compatible with 'Tone Out'. You can program in your FD's tones and the scanner will alert you just like a FD pager, etc. You can find more info on these scanner at...

Radio shack pro-96 is much more sensitive than the Uniden models. You might want to try the pro-97 if you don't need digital. They both rock off the whip and have great software for programming.

For a digital handheld, I really like my Pro-96.

You have my vote for the pro-96.
I just tried it on my first road trip and it worked pretty well. With just the included antenna, i get about 30 mile range with it.
It saved me on the way back, from at least getting stopped, if not getting a ticket.

I was listening to DPS when i caught a call about something/someone about 10 miles ahead. then someone responds with a mile marker 1 mile ahead of me. since i knew they were just ahead of me, i slowed, and cruised up to where they should be. i didn't see them, so i thought maybe they were ahead of me, but i kept it down just in case. then suddenly i look in my rear view mirror, and see what looked like an unmarked unit, catching me. i maintained my speed, and they caught up about a mile later and slowly passed me. i didn't see where they came from, but thanks to the scanner, i knew they were there somewhere.
Without it, i would have blown past that area, possibly getting nailed, or at least paced, then stopped.
