CB''s are still a great accessory or a must for cars today
I miss the good ole days when cb was a lot of fun and was not just a macho power thing.
Met a lot of cool people from CB. Used to have fun shooting skip with 4 watts through a ground plane antenna. Very few people had an amp or extra channels
Remember there was no cellular phones then so there were a lot of family base to mobile, base to marine operations.
Yep, I had a great time on CB.

At it's best, CB was a dependable local radio service that was used by families, folks on road trips, and local folks for informal communication. When I was in Boy Scouts, we'd always use it to coordinate the vehicles on our camping trips. I would do my home work in the afternoon next to our CB Base station, and listen for school mates, or my father driving home from work. There were even coffee breaks and local meets where you'd see the folks you'd spoken to over the air, in person.
At it's worst, CB was unusable for local communication due to skip rolling in, and high powered locals who would hold a channel hostage and talk over everyone. Use of CB in the car was sometimes family unfriendly if truck drivers heard or saw a woman, and let their macho BS spew out in vulgarities on the air.
For a while FRS was a good replacement for a local radio service, but it's pretty crowded now and there's more higher power GMRS radios being used on the FRS channels.
I'm really happy with the Motorola DTR 650 portables I have now. License free and better range than FRS or CB. Granted, they cost more and you are unlikley to run into other folks that have them.
When i drove to PA lst month i didn't even know how to get there. I was towing a trailer and didn't know how to get around all the parkways that i normaly take. The whole time i was on the CB and got help the enitre trip not to mention some helpful smokie alerts. It is truely a great resource.
Hmmm, I've been thinking about getting one for my longer trips. But I wasn't sure they are still useful.
You guys still use and like them, do you?
I'd like to get something that looks nice in my Lexus so have thought of getting this: 75 WX ST All-in-handset Mobile CB. You can see it here:
Any idea how I might mount an antenna and keep it as minimal as possible on my car?
I'm just getting into CB myself and am learning very quickly that small and stealthy just plain don't cut it. You need a big antenna to get anything decent for a signal.
