Hey TRC. I'm running a Uniden 510 and a little wil antenna. You can get 3-5 miles on the highway out in the country, less in the city.
10 miles is BS. It's about as plausible as those two-way radios that claim 15+miles of range.

LOL, got to love the motorolla ads.
What size antenna do you have? 2 or 3 foot? I heard the coiled antennas are better, but I have no idea what that means or how it works.
i get 10 miles with my tuned and peaked Uniden 510xl with my Wilson 500...But the Wilson 500 is a bit bigger than the lil wil :wink:Originally Posted by jerry540i

Down in south Texas, driving btwn El Paso and San Anton, doing 90 on I-10 (80 the speed limit and seen no genocide at all), lots of Texas smokeys in Ford F-150s, the border just around the corner, as soon as I gave a smokey alert with the exact 20 of the radar trap I received another one from a trucker driving in the opposite way, 20 miles (32 kms) btwn us!!! And the signal was very, very, very clear... I know, open road, desert everywhere, but still 20 miles is a lot :wink:Originally Posted by jerry540i

We'll here is explanation of how a CB Antenna works.....
A CB antenna has to be a certain Length
in order to produce the freq's 26.965 - 27.405.
These freqs. are Channel 1 through Channel 40.
This length that it has to meet is 102 inches. I'm sure
you've heard the term 102 inch steel whip. When
you see one of these antenna's, you'll notice that they
are completely straight and very long. When you see
a shorter antenna, you'll notice a round bulge at the
base of the Antenna. The reason for this bulge is
to wrap wire continuously in a circle this is to simulate
102 inches. That way you can have a shorter antenna
but still have enough wire to produce the frequency's.
The shorter antennas do pretty well but not as well as a real
102 inch whip.
Just remember the longer the antenna, the better your range.
Hope this helps
I don't know if this is allowed (if not; let me know and i will delete the post), but www.cbradiotalk.com is a well of knowledge. The only reason i gave a link to another forum is it is not a competing counter measure forum. Strictly radios.
Personally, I run a Uniden PC78XL with a Wilson 1000 magnet mount. After all was said and done, a smidge over 200 bucks. Already paid for itself and i've had it a week. Not only in ticket avoidance, but great for traffic. Truckers will tell if a route is backed up, speed limit enforecment, and just a good chat. I have ~ a 5 mile range with barefeet.
