    Default Discrete antenna?

I am looking to getting a CB and I know handheld units suck and that to get good reception, you should use a roof mounted antenna. I was wondering if a discrete antenna exists, as I do not want to put an antenna on my roof or trunk. Do glass mounted antennas work ok?

    Thanks

I have a glass mounted antennae for my scanner. It improved reception quite a bit. My car is made of composite plastic so there was no metal to mount it to.
I also had a similar set up on my WRX wagon for the CB and it performed pretty good. Of course nothing like the whip antennae on my Wrangler.

You've been profoundly misinformed or at least misguided, handheld CBs like the one I've been using for almost 2 years are no different than the traditional ones, more over handheld ones are more expensive than the regular ones, less space and all buttons and the mic itself all are on one piece only, handheld CBs, mine at least, come with a cigarette lighter adapter and have the capability to attach an external speaker for louder volume... the antenna is the one that gives you a long or, respectively, short range...

My friend has a handheld CB with a 27 inch attached antenna and he has about 1 mile range with his CB. I think it is a cobra, and the only time he can get a better signal is to stick it out the window. I just laugh at him and now he doesn't use it anymore.

Tell your friend to get a REAL antenna so he will be able to use the CB Radio at its maximum power... with my Wilson 5000 I usually get about 10 mile range of clear Tx/Rx on the open road but once down in south Texas I got 20 mile range of very clear signal...

Same with the satellite TV, you can buy the most expensive sat receiver on the market, DTV, DishNet or FTA, if you're running a bad sat antenna or a small one, or you don't know how to set the antenna to get the best signal reception, you will get stuck with the receiver and YOU looking to yourself into the TV

I would not recommend the thru-glass antenna for CB... hard to set the SWR it seems and not as good at transmission as a stand-alone roof mounted. Seem's they make them things for astetics more than anything...

Better off to get a mangnetic roof mount, will give you better range both receive/transmit and some are compact enough to not look ugly. Plus you can remove it whenever you want v.s. a permanent mounted type antenna.

Little Willy would be a good antenna choice:

I've got a magnetic roof mount Radio Shack deal on my little truck with a Maxon unit and I get 5 miles consistantly here in the hills of central NC.. probably more in flatter ground areas.

Uniden makes a good CB radio

    Not a problem Mike.
You'd suprised at the performance of small quality units.
Handhelds are ok,, but who wants to ride around talkin on a handheld really...

The main thing is,, have a CB shop set the SWR, that's the most important. If you dont get the SWR set right... it'll fustrate ya and you'll have no range. Usaully to set the SWR on the antenna doesnt take huge movement... usually a small adjustment, then tighten it down and enjoy usin the radio set up!

My 6 year old loves usin the CB, he'll tell the truckers when he see's a plain brown wrapper hiddin in the Co-median.. he uses mile markers and even chats it up to break the duldrum of highway travel by askin them how much they tow, how much hp they have, where they goin... ect....
I'm not too excited about his "handle" "Big Toe Foot"... but that's what he call's himself!! ha ha ha ha......

Dont be afraid to use or talk on the radio! it's a good thing to have in any vehicle
