Thread: older model CBs

    Default older model CBs

I have an older Cobra 29LTD Classic manufactured in Nov of 91. Also have an older Cobra 19DX, not sure when it was made though. The 19Dx works but I dont know if the 29LTD does. They are my dads, but have been sitting in the garage for years now. I'm wanting to put a CB in my car, should I get a newer CB or do you think these old ones still got it? I wasnt looking for anything with special with bells and wistles but want something decent.

The older ones should be fine. Just make sure to get a good antenna if you dont allready have one. I really like my Wilson Little Wil, and it was pretty cheap.

How much better would the 29LTD be compared to a 19DX or uniden 520xl? I will be getting either the Little Wil or 1000, not sure yet. I'm picky about the install being clean so I dont want the wire across the top of car or a huge antenna. I want to have good range so I will learn to deal with it but how would the 1000 trunk mount do compared to the little wil on top centered? Another thing, I have a 15" subwoofer that pounds and i'm not sure how the trunk mount would hold up with the trunk vibrating a lot. Well I hooked the 29LTD up to some power and the lcd numbers dont read out correctly so I guess I will be buying a new cb.

Both of them will perform about the same, but the 29 has more features. I do think that the 29 MAY be able to be peaked at a radio shop to output more watts than your 19 though, but I'm not sure. Hook up your 19 and try it out. After a while if you get into it, get a radio with more options.

The Little Wil is 3 feet long and the 1000 is 5. If the 1000 is too long for you and you do not want wires on your roof, grab a Little Wil and put it on your trunk. You can run the cable immediately into your trunk and out of sight. It will perform satisfactorily, I guarantee it. It will also not stand out all that much.

That's too bad. The older run Cobras are widely regarded as some of the most reliable CB radios ever made, and even more so the ones made in the Philippines. Don't ask me why, it's just what I've read on countless occasions on CB forums and web sites.

i had the same dilemma when installing mine this weekend. Cobra 29 NW with the 1000. if you dont like the wire hanging on the little wil go with the 1000 and get the short load whip. overall it will be the same height as the little wil and no cord. the 1000 also is very easy to remove because it screws onto its base and has a nice cap that screws on to replace it when removed. i actually believe i prefer my 1000 now more than i anticipated i would. looks great - even with the 62" whip on top. very clean install. make sure you use a tapered bit when drilling though. you can get them at places like autozone for about 15 bucks. drill a small pilot and then use the other bit. made a beautiful 3/4" hole with no distortion or anything. very nice!

Forgot to say my parents would flip you know what on me if I drilled a whole in my car. The trunk lip mount would be cool cause the wire would be hidden, dont have a huge magnet, even though its on the trunk it will perform good since its got like a 62" whip, but I dont know how well it will stay on with a lot of vibrating from my sub. Anyone know of some shops around Charlottel, Hickory, Mooresville, all in NC? I should say that both thr 19 and 29 are tuned up some according to my dad. I know I said the 29 doesnt work but the only thing I can see wrong with it is the lcd channel read out doesnt display the numbers correctly, probaly just the lcd. So if I could find a shop around here to fix that would be better than buying a new one.

Your radios should be good. You might want to send the one you choose to a CB shop for a peak and tune. I believe the cobras can max out above 20 watts once peaked.

I have the little will and it performs much better on the roof then it does on the trunk. Just go for the 1000 so you don't regret it or think about what if later on.

It really doesn't look that bad with the coax going up my rear glass to the roof. You can easily take the antenna off to store it in the trunk and you can attach the mag to the bottom of your trunk for storage. This way you will not have to worry about pulling out the coax thats tucked away on its way to the radio.
