    Default Scanner Recommend

I am looking for a entry level scanner for my vehicle...I know my local uses trunking system but that's about it...I have never used one so don't know if I'll like it so don't want to spend a lot of $$$$

Check out scanamerica.us and see if your area is listed there. If it is you can listen in on several internet enabled mobile phones, such as an iPhone.

    iPhone Applications
    1/2Way down the page.

Also visit the scanamerica.us website, then click on the 'forums' link, then click on the 'Announcements' section, and the IPhone topic is the 3rd down from the top, and the cell-phone general is 4 from the top.

To the original topic: I do not know much at all about scanners... but how much is 'Not a lot of money'. That is very subjective... are we talking $100, $200, $400? I think that would be a good place to start ( A cap on price).

1st I feel the need to inform you any "installed" scanner in a vehicle is illegal in FL (a handheld run off of battery power is a gray area.
2nd FHP uses an encrypted type system so no scanner can listen in
3rd When looking at trunking (for other agency's, such as SO local PD and fire) you can find them for roughly 150 for analog, if you need digital trunking, you're looking at approximately 500 to get into it (sometimes RadioShack has sales that can considerably lower that).

I'd recommend seeking out some free software, then going on to RadioReference and organizing scanners memory banks by county and service type so you can quickly set it up to where you are.

Yeah, I have been thinking about getting a scanner (Pro-96) for awhile too, but for the little it does as a countermeasure (compared to a CB), and how much more complicated it is to get going... I just am not sure its worth it.

Exactly. That's what I keep trying to tell people.

Good thing you figured it out before you blew hundreds of dollars on something you'd end up putting on eBay at a loss.
