I tried tu ning my 4 foot "Trim to Tune" Firestick today. The first read pegged the meter and after trimming 1/4 inch X 2 the SWR was 2. After trimming another 1/8 inch the SWR went up to 4. I've read that I can place washers between the antenna/mount to bring it back in but is it normal for a too short antenna t0 have a higher SWR?
I changed to another 3 foot antenna I got at a truck stop and the SWR didn't move the needle and stayed at zero. I did a couple of "radio checks" on the interstate and it seems to be working OK.
Does this sound right or do I need to review my procedure?
I have a Cobra 19 DX IV with an 18' wilson coax (expensive one) and a wilson mount. The antenna is mounted in the center of the trunk lid about 3" from the back. I couldn't put it dead center because the antenna would prevent the trunk from opening. I also grounded the antenna base directly to the chassis to prevent any loss of ground from the hinge mechanism.
I may go with a wilson antenna (Couldn't find one locally) but I figured I'd go with a good coax because it was the hardest part to install.
Sorry for the long post but I'm new to this CB stuff.
