If you are sure you want a scanner, check out RadioReference.com - Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference. If you don't have a CB I would spend the money on that. On a highway trip the CB will give you much more info. A scanner is a great thing, but the learning curve is much more than a CB. Slap an Cb and antenna on for less than a 100 dollars and you are set to go.
I used to own a scanner and sold it so i know what i'm getting back into.I'll do a cb also, looking at Cobra 75WX-ST from Sparkys.Years ago i owned an full K setup and loved it.Now just looking for something just to use when traveling until i pickup my H3 then it's back to the drawing board for protection setup.

Does NYSP use digital or regular radio comms?
If I'm not mistaken, all state-wide police agencies are now digital. I thought I heard that Mississippi was the last one to go digital? ....Could be wrong....

Honestly I bought a BCT8 from uniden and the only saves it has given me have been from when it picks up CB channel 19. This is with about 2 months of use. All the statie transmissions go state wide... I'll be traveling up 93 north to new hampshire from MA and I will usually just hear about pullovers and irradic drivers 40 miles+ away from me. Only once have I heard the location of a LEO without the LEO having already pulled someone over.
If you're simply using it to get away with going 20 over the PSL its not going to help much. Now if you tend to go overboard with your accelerator often (I'd say over 105 mph) then I would get it so you can know if/when someone calls you in as an erratic. But even then I've not had an experience of my plates getting called in. CB radio is much more useful. Believe me... better range on channel 19 with a $30 cb than with a $130 scanner.
You'll need a digital capable scanner in Georiga. GSP, along with a growing number of county/city agencies are using digital systems now.
