Default dumb question about high and low band

like i said its dumb....what is high and low band? i was talking with a guy at work and told him im looking for a CB for my car. he started talking about these CBs that work on a high and low band. but i cant find any CB listed that way. do they all do this?
    thanks for the help

i was thinking about this radio but if its not high/low then ill go for something that is. i dont see the reason to go through the effort to mount and money to by a CB thats not going to give me the most coverage.

If he was actually saying high and low band, he either isn't talking about CBs, or he simply doesn't know what he is talking about. High band and low band are both above the citizens band, and have nothing to do with CB radio. They are in the scanner radio range.

I suspect he was talking about UPPER and LOWER SIDEBAND, which are two different talk modes on higher-end CB radios. Google them if you're really interested, but it's nothing worth spending any extra money on, especially if you're only using the radio as a travel companion and countermeasure.

I don't think that Uniden does.

    Look at this:
    Ranger SS-158EDX AM/SSB 10 Meter Mobile Transceiver**BLUE DISPLAY**

    **NEW**RCI-3900HP AM/FM/SSB 10 Meter Transceiver **NEW**

The first uses USB and LSB lingo, the second SSB, but they both mean useless.

Say you speak Norwegian and Spanish. Imagine you go to Germany and you happen to find a guy that speaks Norwegian. Then you ask him if he speaks Spanish. Do you really think you are going to find a guy in Germany that speaks Norwegian, nevermind Spanish?

SSB or Single Side Band is quite useful. When you make a contact on the freeway with a passing trucker or other motorist and start a conversation, the range on AM is far shorter than SSB.

I have used it to "shoot the ****" with people on the freeway for 40+ miles traveling in opposite directions. Try that on AM without an RF Preamp and Linear.

Most truckers with big radios have SSB radios. Most export radios have it aswell.

The best part about it, when atmospheric conditions are right for propagation and "skip" roles in you can make some really really long distance contacts on 38 LSB. I have made numerous contacts in australia while on long road trips. It makes for a more interesting drive.

    Just a thought.

Australians won't help you avoid the police.

But I suppose the sidebands are nice for the hobby aspect of the CB, so it's all about what you want to get out of it. I've never had a radio with SSB so maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

You're right! I guess I am a hobbyist too then. who knew? Nah, I do use it to pass time on long trips. Especially between Dallas and Houston on the 45. Gets kind of boring. I don't know, I guess I assumed that others use their radios for more than a counter measure.

I have a SSB band radio... Galaxy dx 949. I have found little use for SSB yet but honestly I have never needed to chat with truckers that much

I don't have sideband and never move from 19. From time to time I'll hear guys say "go to 15" or something but I've never heard a reference to sideband. I thought it may have been something I may have wanted in the future but 40 channels is enough.

Rob is probably trying to discourage you because of all the secret stuff that happens on USB...

the high and low band are the "freeband" channels +40 and -40 from the authorized 40 cb channels. keep in mind TXing on these channels is illegal though!
