    Default Handheld Scanner help

I need a little Handheld Scanner help. I think they are illegal to use in your cars? (I live in Michigan). If they are illegal, can I just turn it off and set on the floor if I get pulled over? Would the PO do anything?

Also, what is the best handheld scanner I can get for $100 MAX. Thanks

Sorry Im a newb to all this.

Im using a RX65 Pro too, if that matters...

Well, the wording of the law is a bit ambiguous, as it says you cannot "equip" a vehicle with a scanner. I remember seeing somewhere where someone wrote letters to some different jurisdictions asking how far they would enforce it. Some replied that they would even consider it a violation to have one in your trunk. So it all depends.

Better safe than sorry, just get the permit:

MSP is APCO25 digital, and you won't be able to get a scanner to monitor that for $100 or less. But there are plenty of VHF/UHF analog scanners for less than $100 that will still let you monitor some of the locals who aren't digital.

Get the permit. I think they are relatively easy to get.

I live in Indiana so I had to get my ham license to be legal. But I drove for years with a handheld w/o the license. I knew if a cop was coming after me and I could turn the scanner off and stash it under the seat. They never knew the difference.

Plus the Pro-96 is only $399! That's just about $100 off.
