I am about to purchase a Uniden BCD996XT from scannermaster.com and would like to purchase some programming software with it. Any ideas? How exactly does the software work?

I don't own and never used any police scanner but I've done some research on this subject, as far as I know all Uniden scanner come with pre-installed police frequencies from everywhere in US, my advice is to get the scanner first and then see what's in its database, also the best place to stay in touch with police frequencies is RadioReference.com - Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference Database
Enjoy it!
That's the model that works with a Garmin-like GPS?
I have used radio reference before, it's a great site, the only reason I am getting the scanner is for the digital/p25 reception, which my two current scanners don't have. I am pretty sure that the scanner does have a gps function, the website was vague about what it acually does, I hope it will automatically switch frequeny banks based on my location. The scanner software would hopefully make it easier to program the scanner, which can be very tedious and time consuming when loading mass amount of frequencies and trunking groups.
ScanNow.org - The Home of FreeSCAN!
I use freescan for my BCT15. It has "easygrab" which allows you to copy/paste from RR. I don't have the GPS antenna for mine but I have all the freqs for the areas I travel programmed and it works pretty well.
It's fun getting pulled over and listening to the fuzz call you in
There are some scanner "heavies" on here that can offer you a LOT of help.
