    Default I want a scanner

I live in NY state. Radar detectors usually help for locals but what about State Police, will a scanner work with those? Do they report their locations when running laser or make it obvious where they are? I can't trust a radar detector on the Thruway...

What scanner should I get? Small and a good price would be preferred.

    Thanks.

If it's only for NY, consider yourself very lucky. Almost any scanner will do since NY is still entirely analog! Not sure, but I don't think they're even using the 800 MHz band. Even my ancient BC-1 (no digital, no 800) picks up most of the Staties.

I've been told by a local that they're (the local pd) is going from "400 to 800" -- whatever that means.

    Anyone know what PA uses?

    Is this a good one?

Or should I look for a Uniden (I think) that has the close call feature?

EDIT: Do cops have anything that would show you have a scanner? Like a scanner detector or something... or would your scanner interfere with their radio if you drove by?

    Thanks.

Scanning police radio's from a car is extremely illegal unless you have a "ham licence"...And generally police do not report where they are in a speed trap....You are better off with a CB listening to truckers

Uniden wit hthe close call feature is alot more handy

How much does a license cost?

Can a cop "detect" if you're listening in?

EDIT: Any scanners that pick up trucker CB too?
EDIT2: If you get pulled over, will a cop ask for a license to run that scanner?

Yes, you can get scanners that will receive CB...

I agree 100% with CVR though...In my experience police don't often announce their location. Scanning is a fun hobby, but if you are looking for something for ticket avoidance, a CB is 100X better.

Now the Uniden scanners with the "Highway Patrol Alert" are wonderful, in the states where it works anyway (Uniden BCT8, Radioshack Pro2051).

Scanning mobile in New York could be asking for trouble though. See this page:

Scanners generally don't pick up CB frequencies good at all.

You need to pass a FCC radio operators test for a ham licence.

Cop will most likely not ask for your licence and assume you don't have it and you will have to prove that you have it in NY

I would not run a scanner in NY if I were you it's a horrible idea i think. I never run my scanner in NY and I even take my antenna off my roof when i am driving through NY
