I'm hoping to add a CB to the arsenal soon but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to go about mounting the antenna. I know Surffly started a very similar thread here the other day, but I don't want to divert his efforts with my own questions...
I think I'd like something a little more sturdy and substantial than a magnet mount, plus I don't want to have to deal with the hassle of finding an open area to test my SWR (whatever that is--all I know is it's an important indicator of how optimally your setup is functioning) every time I remove and replace the mount, not to mention the eventual scratches to the paint, the possibility of it coming off at speed, etc.
Anyway, I was hoping that the peanut gallery could help me to figure out what my options are. There's a CB shop about 50 miles away (closest I could dig up) that can do installations, hardwire the rest of my crap while they're at it, etc., but I'd like to try to figure out what my options are before heading up there.
I've got a ridiculously large sunroof that when open, has the glass slid back inside the roof as far as the end of this purple tape measure goes, so I feel like a roof mount might not be the best idea. Plus, I'm a little apprehensive about putting a hole in the roof over the passenger compartment so I'd like to avoid that option unless I have no other choice.
However, there's the spoiler to contend with. Here are pictures of it closed and open.
The phone and tape measure are there to help visualize scale, but when I opened and closed it, it doesn't look like the spoiler ever gets any closer to the edge of the roof than it does in this picture, so if it's possible for a trunk-mount to work up there with about 3/4" of clearance (I can measure the tolerance more precisely if that will be useful to know) that might a possibility.
I was thinking that perhaps using a mount like THIS ONE might be a possibility as long as it were affixed "backwards" compared to the way it's pictured in the second photo on the site. I don't know if that little lip on it might be a dealbreaker though.
Here's what I'm working with in terms of the inside of the tailgate in case that's useful.
Finally, I've got roof rack rails that I might also be able to use, but I think I'd probably prefer to mount it in the center of the tailgate or roof instead of off to the side. I'm kind of anal about symmetry, but if one of the rails provides the best option somehow, I'm not totally opposed to it.
As far as a setup goes, my cockpit is kind of cramped (plus I don't envision myself needing too many bells and whistles) so I'm considering either the Uniden PRO510XL, PRO520XL, or PRO538W, either an Aries DM-452 Echo microphone or an echo board (if recommended) and an Astatic D104-M6 microphone along with a Wilson 1000 antenna. Any feedback (haha) on this tentative setup?
Thanks a million for any and all insight, recommendations, opinions, etc.!
