    Default how does one know what he needs to program from radio ref?

    lets say I want to program opp
    Ontario Provincial Police Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

    which do I want programmed in regards to traffic police etc.

    how do u guys decide what u like and based on link how do u search ? thanks alot

    You basically have to listen to them all for a couple of years and then figure out which ones are useful and which ones are not. There is no shortcut.

    It really depends on where you live and where you travel.

    Pick the sites and talkgroups close to you and scan those.

    Yes, if your scanner supports control channel only and you have entered a bandplan for the system then you're all set.

    I programmed almost every pd dispatcher; car to car; trooper.. I just programmed different areas into different "banks." that way, depending on where i am driving/who i have in the car, I don't get a lot of unwanted reception.
    My antenna is incredible, i am very impressed, but even with the squelch cranked all the way, my range is almost TOO good. the banks help with keeping it local.

    Stealth,

    I'm trying to answer his question about what / what not to listen to, and sharing an example on how to decode / interpret a typical conversation between dispatch and a patrol car.

    To make the format of my post readable I have a lot of line breaks for new paragraphs; could that be the problem? I couldn't send it as a PM, nor could I break it up into 2 smaller posts.
