Default What's the max legal power for a CB

Local CB dealer is trying to sell me an 18 watt CB radio. I thought 5 watts was the legal limit.

it's 4 watts carrier for AM, 12 watts peak envelope for SSB. Rule #10

I did read the stickies, all it talks about is Power Output Peak – something I quite don’t understand. If this gets me a ban from the site, so be it. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

It is 4 watts. But who is watching. Especially in a mobile.

Because it's a lot easier for a cop who can't get a reading to spot the offender than it is to find (and for people to care enough to report) an illegal radio user.
