My first road test using BCT15X today. I am going to use the pre-programmed Highway Patrol Frequencies and BearTracker enabled... wish me luck. Driving Interstate 80 from SLC to Bay Area.

The western Staties still use analog.
While I got some transmissions, they were hit and miss and not useful. That said, I'm using the antenna that came with the unit, and I just ordered an external Larsen 800 mhz antenna with trunk lip mount... going again in a week, so try this again. Damn, a lot of miles on my poor new car. (5000 miles in one month).

I'm very interested to hear how well the close call alert works. I'd think actually having a weaker antenna (or none) would make this feature more useful. I'd like to know when they are 1 mile away not 3 miles. 3 miles of range would make me nuts. I'm only interested in picking up the RF of the mobile repeater. I don't really care about any conversations, just beeps for proximity.
Sounds like a cool toy.
So its all 800mhz you are scanning? might want to take the time to program in the specific frequencies you are looking for. Some police on interstates are using the UHF or even VHF still so you might want to run dual antenna's 800mhz and All frequency antenna, thats what I use to do
Spoiler: show
Any updates???
I originally used the funky antenna that came with the unit. I got a Larsen 150/450/800 antenna that makes a world of difference. CHP dispatch came in great, as did Utah. NHP, however was more elusive. I am traveling to Las Vegas this weekend, so should have more data - especially with the external antenna set up.
Not my car - but antenna is same..

I think the problem was not the radio, just no cops on the road... see my other post on that topic.

New report for weekend of 7/23 :
Ok, so using the pre-programmed highway patrols for each state, I used Utah, Arizona, and Nevada on the BCT15X, and Larsen antenna. UHP uses conventional frequencies, and this was sort of fine, but a lot of areas with poor reception - again, my antenna is tweaked for 800mhz.
Arizona was empty, there is not a lot of I-15 in Arizona, so nothing to write home about.
Nevada, I-15. This was STELLAR. I got crisp, clear reception on highway patrol stops. I knew which mile marker a cop was hanging around, and was able to adjust speed when I knew one was near.. and sure enough, spotted them pulling someone else over. I was impressed - again, I was using a new trunk mounted antenna. My next trip on Thursday is SLC to San Francisco.
