Default Need CB Stealth Install and Antenna Question

I really want a CB, but I live in an area with an astronomical rate of car break-ins. (Someone will smash your window for a few dimes in the cup holder). I almost bought a Uniden 510XL and mounted it under the seat, but when looking for antennas, I realized I had few options.

I drive a hatchback, so I don't have a real trunk to mount the antenna to. Also, any permanent mount is out of the question because it will be a red flag for anyone looking to break in. I read about mag-mount antennas, but people are claiming they will fly off over 70mph, especially on a roof. Has anyone had any success with the handheld models from Cobra? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I use a magnet mount for my Wilson 5000 and often do over 85 mph on the highway. I have never had my magnet mount come off. I didn't want to drill any holes in the console of my 2009 Silverado pickup, so I manufactured a mount that could easily take the radio out in less than 15 seconds. Just put some thought into it, and you can come up with something. I never travel without my CB. It has given me a heads up many times, and is an essential addition to my radar detector and laser jammer...... But NOTHING beats good old situational awareness!!! Hope this helped....Be Safe!

Never had an issue with it flying off, and I've used a few. Unfortunately stealth and CB are almost mutually exclusive, to get the proper length for a good signal you're looking at at least 3ft. I use a mount designed for hatches, originally marketed for amateur radio, but works great with CB, so there are some options that way for you. The tough part about a mag mount is if you care about the paint on your car, if it's not perfectly clean underneath you're marring your paint, if you set it and leave it, it's fine but then raises suspicion to those that would be breaking in.

Mag mount just throw antenna in your trunk at night. Handhelds are a waste - trust me I have wanted to have a handheld work so many times and have tried so many times. I even tried mounting the handheld on my visor with the antenna touching the window -no good at all...

Also take a look at the Cobra 75WXST. This is what I have in the Jeep, in part due to somewhat limited mounting space, but mainly because anything left sitting visible just cannot be secured in it. This is pretty easy to unplug and toss in the console bin.

The Wilson 5000 magnet mount antenna suggested above would be an excellent choice, and Wilson has a pretty good reputation. Be sure to get your antenna correctly tuned and check it from time to time. SWR meters can be had for as little as $15, and it's worth having one to check your antenna tune regularly.

The hand-held is really not likely to get you satisfactory range. It just doesn't have enough antenna for it.

I had a magnetic mount antenna that stayed put at speeds over 135.
