Default Scanner: Best bang for the buck

Hey, i'm looking for a scanner. I would like to be able to pick up all of the important police bands, but if I could also pick up things like undercover and accidents, etc.

Good range, etc.

Where in VA are you?

Check what is used in your area here so we can help:
RadioReference.com - Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference Database

If you see "ACPO-25" in any of the bands you want to listen to, you will need a $500+ digital scanner.

I got my Uniden Handheld BCT246T for $180 on ebay and I really like it so far.

Features I like:
Alert option : flashes and displays a sound if you set it to a specific frequency (I set it to all repeater input frequencies so I can tell if a LEO is nearby)
Organization:
Systems->Groups->Channels
Easy lockout
Decent range for the current crappy antenna it has
Good trunking support.

Range is all in your antenna.... I just ordered a mag mount:
ANT76BNC, MOBILE TRUNK SCANNER ANTENNA WITH BNC CONNECTOR - 18 INCHES TALL - Scanner World - The Largest Dealer of Scanning Radios in the World
It looked good to me... 1 1/2 feet tall, can do a wide variety of bands (I listen to 460mhz conventional systems and an 800mhz Motorola trunked system)

The ones you find at radioshack are cheap I hear.... they have problems going over 85mph and bend easily if they hit anything.
