IMO an effective CB set-up is the most underrated, and certainly underused countermeasure there is for highway/interstate/thruway driving.
I seriously could not agree with you more. I have had situations where I end up driving someone else's vehicle on a long distance trip. I have a cheap CB setup that I rig up for those cases. A few times I thought I was going to have to choose between the CB and my RD, but my cousin saved the day with his cigarette lighter socket splitter, enabling me to plug both in. I will say though without hesitation that if I honestly had to decide, my RD would stay at home LONG before I'd go on the open road without a CB radio.

Well, went and tested it out around town on the interstates today. The best I could verify was 10 mile reception. Not bad. Then I went and got some flat black and blacked out the whip-nice! Then looked at my front door and my SWR meter was sitting there having just been delivered! Good day! I have to wait a bit before I can check SWR, though, as everyone has said to stay away from fences and structures and I don't have anywhere at my house that is far from either!
Oh, and speaking of emergency CB's I found a nice clean used one still in the box on fleabay for $9.99. Figured I'd stow it in the back of the wife's CR-V.
After a few months and one 18 hr trip to Colo and back I have to say I love mine. I had a glass mount and put on the lil wil for the trip. I have not taken it off, the range is just so much better I can't go back. Texas is really good, the trucker are great, even if you just listen you will get great info.

I know what you mean. I bought one of those little emergency CB's for the wife's car. We took a road trip this weekend and even though it had a pretty good little whip, the reception was about 3/4 mile at best. I felt naked!

Wow, thats a real bummer. I would return it! I really don't see the point on having a CB if you can't TX/RX 5 miles+ in any direction.
Oh, it was a NIB but about 15 year old model I got for $9.99 off eBay. I may buy a second little Wil and coax adapter for road trips.
Yeah, if you were just using the duck whip on the radio itself, forget it. A quarter mile is generous. You have to get an external antenna with ground plane to see any improvement. You'll probably be surprised at how much better that thing actually works with a Lil Wil, assuming you can get an adaptor.
