CB Channel 9
I always wondered about CH 9 - if it is a wasted channel. I was driving back from LV the other day and part of the trip was in heavy snow, some guy spun out into the field and down an embankment. Not injured, but embarrassed as hell. Anyway, no cell phone coverage way out there, and no one listening on CH 9 on the radio. Luckily some snow plow guy with a radio was able to call for a tow.

Re: CB Channel 9
You're gonna get someone on 19 muuuuuuch sooner. And they can drive to cell range or a landline at the worst. HAM radio actually seems like the best method out there sometimes.

And there was one more this summer up on I80 in NV, but I can't seem to find the link to it right now.
I've had a total blow out out of range of Cell HAM and CB radio; and got passed up by an Amish horse and buggy without a second look; that was a long day.3.861
If you can't search I'm just not going to answer. I'm just flat tired of sounding like a broken record.

Re: CB Channel 9
You figure, unless you're transmitting illegally, because of the way RF works on the frequencies CB uses, 5w on 27MHz (HF) barely has more range than an 1/2w FRS radio on 460MHz (UHF.)
Yes, you'll get someone on 19 sooner than you would on 9, but the VHF and UHF opportunities on amateur radio would provide much better results.
I have no cell phone service at my hunting lease, yet I can use VHF, hit our local repeater and get a hold of someone back in town, a 45 mile/50 minute drive away.2003 Tahoe Z71

Re: CB Channel 9
At this point most all of the "monitor cb 9" signs have fallen down due to age. I was quite surprised to find though, one night listening to the scanner......in NY, at intervals the operators of the police radio systems read off all the call signs for the individual transmitter stations. At the end of the transmitter call sign readout, I heard my CB crackle to life, and the same voice read a call sign. So, it would appear that there may be a few CB's still on dispatch desks.
I have called CQ on channel 9 a few times in the NY area, and no one has ever responded.
