Mine has saved me twice in the 2 weeks I've had it. They take a lot of study, meaning listening time to discern what is nearby, but with good programming and knowledge of repeaters, frequencies, etc ( all from radioreference.com) mine has already paid for itself.

Plus I run a very LEO heavy area. They call out their location with every traffic stop and my campus police, who are actual city police, make it really obvious with what they are doing.

Same here.

Often the dispatcher will ask in code where are they and the LEO replies (sort of in code) as to where they are and sometimes what direction they are looking

I find the information more interesting than useful, but I don't think I could have another car without a scanner.
