The RX55 has good range. In my experience owning one, it was almost as good as the RX65 on Ka but it is a falsy little bugger and you can't disable bands [except citynoX]

For sure. Why not just a 12V horn relay? Surely the switching time is fast enough? If you got hit hit instant-on a few millisec is probably not gonna help you anyway.

Not sure of a way using the headphone outlet, but you could use the Smartplug/Smartcord and replace the 'alert' LED with a relay hooked up the the 'mute' of the mp3 head unit - this output flashes on...
