try using the 9500i with the supplied smartcord to the lighter socket. That'll tell you if it's the detector or wiring.

I asked him just that. He couldn't give me a clear answer to how the shielded 9500i would compare to my 3 y.o. 8500 X50 Rev. 5 that had no issues.

They're aware. Why they don't put the fix in across the board is beyond me. Unless it drastically affects the laser sensitivity.
