The Toyota FJ has some plusses and minuses, mostly centered around vehicle size. It is a fairly tall vehicle, making the FJ profile a better radar target. However, height has its advantages WRT countermeasures. A detector mounted high in the vehicle is about 6' off the ground providing much better range than say, the same detector mounted in a Saturn Sky.
Here is a link to the page on my site that describes the FJ installation.
BTW, my Passport is hardwired to the car electrical system such that the detector comes on when the key is turned to start the car. It was easy to do on the FJ and is just as easy on your vehicle. That process is also described.
Yes, I live in VA and yes, I have radar detector in daily use and am not a bit worried about being "caught." Why? While traveling through one of the states worst speed traps, Emporia, VA (second only to the little towns in Rt 13 on the Eastern Shore) I was approached for using a radar detector. Took the matter to court and prevailed. The story is just below the installation details.
